The Washington Commanders enter the final stretch of the 2026 preseason facing a pair of significant injuries that have already altered their depth on both sides of the line.
With a second exhibition game against the Detroit Lions scheduled for Aug. 22 at Ford Field, the team must now manage the absences of two veterans while evaluating who can fill the resulting gaps.
Left tackle Laremy Tunsil underwent surgery to repair a torn triceps during training camp and will miss an undetermined stretch of time.
Shortly afterward, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that defensive tackle Johnny Newton required surgery of his own after tearing a pectoral muscle and is expected to be unavailable for a substantial portion of the season.
Newton, 27, posted a 47.5 PFF grade last year across 430 defensive snaps, recording 24 solo tackles, seven assists, 18 stops, 18 hurries, three quarterback hits, 27 pressures and six sacks. Those numbers will be difficult to replace, particularly as the Commanders look to establish their defensive identity.
Head coach Dan Quinn acknowledged the difficulty of losing Tunsil, describing him as both an elite performer and an outstanding teammate whose presence will be missed. In the interim, Brandon Coleman is slated to start at left tackle.
Quinn has voiced confidence in Coleman’s offseason work and prior experience in the role, suggesting the organization believes he is prepared to handle the assignment. The remaining preseason contests now take on added importance for younger defensive linemen hoping to earn increased snaps in Newton’s absence.
Not every development has been negative. Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, in his first camp with Washington, has drawn praise from teammates for his explosiveness and route-running.
Offensive lineman Sam Cosmi noted Diggs’ shiftiness and ability to create separation, as well as the veteran’s immediate presence in the huddle.
Diggs has been vocal in encouraging the offense during longer practice periods, offering a leadership element that has been well received.
These injuries arrive at an inopportune moment, forcing the Commanders to be cautious with remaining starters as they prepare for Detroit.
The coming days will reveal how quickly the roster can adapt and whether any unexpected contributors emerge before the regular season begins.
