Commanders’ Jayden Daniels Ripped Over LSU Situation

Sports radio host Adam Schein tore into Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels on Monday, labeling the former LSU star as out of touch after Daniels’ legal team sent a cease-and-desist letter to his alma mater.

Schein, speaking on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio, did not hold back.

“There is no one in sports right now who is more moronic than Jayden Daniels,” he said while discussing the quarterback’s actions involving the Tigers program.

The host followed up later on social media with an equally sharp assessment.

“Jayden Daniels torpedoed his good will and legacy at LSU. Let everyone know he doesn’t give a damn about the program. And has no sense of reality,” Schein wrote.

The comments came days after news broke that an attorney for Daniels had contacted LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry. The Aug. 5 letter demanded the school stop any use of the quarterback’s name, image and likeness, citing an expired agreement that included a 180-day grace period after his college career ended.

Sources indicated the move stemmed from LSU assigning Daniels’ old No. 5 jersey to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett. Daniels wore that number during his two seasons with the Tigers, including his 2023 Heisman Trophy-winning campaign when he threw for more than 3,800 yards and 40 touchdowns.

A spokesperson for Daniels told reporters the family felt deeply disappointed and profoundly disrespected by the decision to reissue the number. The statement noted that Daniels had made clear he did not want anyone else to wear it and expected those wishes to be honored given his accomplishments on and off the field.

Daniels himself addressed the matter in an Instagram post, stressing his focus remained on the Commanders.

“I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there. Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately. My sole personal focus is on Commanders’ football. I realize the business of football is unique and I trust this can all be resolved,” he said.

LSU has not retired the No. 5, though it went unused in the seasons after Daniels left for the NFL. Pickett, a former five-star recruit who switched from No. 3, said he had worn five his whole life and was promised the chance to use it during recruitment under the previous coaching staff.

Current Tigers coach Lane Kiffin confirmed the earlier commitment and said the program needed to honor what was told to the player. Kiffin added that the matter was not his call to reverse.

The dispute has drawn widespread attention across sports talk circles, with Schein among the loudest voices criticizing Daniels for what he saw as a self-inflicted blow to his standing with LSU fans and alumni. Other commentators have echoed similar frustration, arguing the letter created unnecessary drama at a time when Daniels should be locked in on his professional career.

Daniels led LSU to a strong 2023 season before the Commanders selected him high in the 2024 draft. He has since established himself as a key piece of Washington’s offense, but the jersey flap has shifted some of the conversation back to his college roots.

No formal response from LSU officials has been issued beyond declining comment when the letter first surfaced. The school continues preparing for the upcoming season under Kiffin, with Pickett expected to start at cornerback.

Schein’s Monday monologue underscored how the episode has damaged perceptions of Daniels among some longtime observers of the program. The host repeatedly stressed that the quarterback appeared disconnected from the realities of college football traditions and fan expectations.

As training camp continues for the Commanders, Daniels has tried to keep the focus on the field. Yet the public nature of the letter and the ensuing backlash ensure the story remains part of the broader discussion surrounding both the NFL star and his former school.
