The Golden State Warriors appear poised to part ways with longtime forward Draymond Green before the NBA’s February trade deadline, according to a recent report, as the franchise eyes a potential roster overhaul heading into the summer of 2027.
Marcus Thompson of The Athletic indicated that the team deliberately left a no-trade clause out of Green’s newly signed one-year contract worth $27.8 million. That decision leaves the veteran highly movable if the club decides a change in direction is necessary midseason.
“It’s probably six months left for the Draymond Green era,” Thompson said on the Plus Minus Podcast. “He’s on a one-year deal, $27.8 million, and doesn’t have a no-trade clause, so that’s a very tradable contract.”
The comments come amid broader signals from the front office that the current core may not remain intact much longer. General manager Mike Dunleavy recently addressed the challenges of managing an aging roster plagued by injuries, including those affecting Stephen Curry, Green and Jimmy Butler.
Dunleavy went further in a news conference, noting that the organization would respect a trade request from Curry should the superstar ever make one. That remark, combined with other remarks about the coaching staff’s difficulties, has been interpreted as preparation for a possible reset.
“It felt like this has been coming for a while, but this, the way Dunleavy was talking, and the way they positioned it, this feels like ‘Alright, let’s see where we are in February because if we’re not where we need to be, then we’re just going to start selling pieces off and starting over,’” Thompson said regarding the team’s outlook for 2027.
Another local reporter, Mark Willard, has suggested the Warriors could even consider moving beyond Green and look at the future of Curry himself. The guard, who will turn 39 next March and played just 43 games last season because of injuries, becomes eligible for a two-year extension worth $136.7 million on Aug. 29. Willard believes the franchise may hesitate before committing that much money to an aging star.
Green has made clear he has no interest in forcing the issue over trade protection. On his podcast last month, the four-time champion explained his decision not to push for a no-trade clause in the new deal.
“It was reported that I did not receive a no-trade clause,” Green said. “No, I didn’t. I think it was something that we could have fought over, but it wasn’t worth fighting over. I think if the Warriors want to trade me at some point in the season, they want to trade me. I’ve never been a guy who wants to stay somewhere where I’m not wanted.”
He offered similar thoughts earlier this year when reports surfaced that the Warriors had floated his name in discussions involving Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“As I’ve always spoke about, I think there is a partnership that this works for us, it works,” Green stressed. “If it doesn’t, it doesn’t, you know, and I never want to be that guy anyway. So, to sit and fight over a no-trade clause, I don’t think it was worth it. It’s pointless. So, that wasn’t a thing.”
Should the Warriors allow Curry, Green and Butler to depart as free agents next summer, the team is projected to clear more than $120 million in salary-cap space. That financial flexibility could position the franchise for a significant rebuild or a major free-agency push depending on how the 2026-27 season unfolds.
For now, the focus remains on the coming months. Green’s contract structure and the front office’s recent comments have set the stage for what many around the league view as the possible final stretch of an era that delivered multiple championships to the Bay Area.
Whether the Warriors stick with their veteran core through the deadline or begin selling assets will likely hinge on early-season results and the health of key players.
