Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has never been one to miss a chance to needle the Atlanta Falcons, and Friday night’s preseason opener offered him another opening he could not resist.
With his Broncos already leading 24-0 at halftime inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the veteran coach used his interview to take aim at the home crowd.
“A lot of people dressed up as empty seats today,” Payton said.
The line landed hard. Falcons supporters had already voiced their frustration by booing their own team off the field after a listless first half, and Payton’s jab simply added insult to the evening’s injury
The scoreboard told its own story. Denver rolled to that commanding lead without starting quarterback Bo Nix, who is still recovering from ankle surgery. Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger handled the offense with ease while the Broncos’ defense kept Atlanta off the board.
For a preseason game the result means little in the standings, yet the optics were unmistakable. A home crowd that was already thin by August standards grew restless, and the visiting coach made sure the moment did not pass unnoticed.
Payton’s history with the Falcons runs deep. During his long tenure with the New Orleans Saints he compiled a 21-9 record against Atlanta and rarely passed up an opportunity to fuel the rivalry.
Even after moving to Denver he has continued the habit, once posting an upside-down smiley emoji in response to news about the Falcons’ rebuilding efforts. Friday’s remark felt like a natural extension of that long-running feud.
The night marked a rough introduction to the Kevin Stefanski era in Atlanta.
New general manager Ian Cunningham and the coaching staff are already navigating a complicated quarterback picture, an eight-game suspension for pass rusher James Pearce Jr., and a season-ending knee injury to edge rusher Jalon Walker.
A lopsided preseason loss and a public needling from a rival coach only compounded the early discomfort.
Preseason crowds are often sparse across the league, and upper-deck seats routinely go unsold in August. Still, being called out on a national broadcast while trailing by four touchdowns is the kind of clip that tends to linger.
Whether the evening was simply an early-season anomaly or a preview of larger problems remains to be seen. The Broncos, meanwhile, appear settled and healthy, with far more promising prospects ahead of them this fall.
Payton, true to form, made certain the Falcons and their fans left the building knowing exactly how the visitor felt about the night’s atmosphere.
