The San Francisco 49ers remain one of several teams monitoring the situation surrounding Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea, who requested a trade nearly three weeks ago after contract extension talks stalled.
Vea, a cornerstone of Tampa Bay’s defensive line since entering the league in 2018, formally sought a new home on July 27. The move came after negotiations on a long-term deal failed to gain traction with the Buccaneers.
For the 49ers, the potential availability of a proven interior presence has drawn attention as the club continues evaluating ways to bolster its defensive front. Multiple teams have reached out to Tampa Bay to gauge interest in a possible trade, and San Francisco is among those that have checked in.
Tampa Bay has made its position clear: the organization has no intention of trading Vea. That stance has held steady even as outside clubs, including the 49ers, Bills and Bears, have inquired about his availability.
Vea has maintained a hold-in throughout the process. He has not practiced with the team in full gear and will sit out Friday’s preseason matchup against the New York Jets. He has appeared at some team gatherings but has not rejoined on-field work.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo provided the latest update Friday ahead of the Buccaneers’ joint practices and preseason game. He noted that communication continues between Vea and the club, yet a resolution remains distant.
“Vea was here with the team at the joint practice, he was not wearing his jersey… my understanding is there has been communication between the sides. A deal is not imminent,” Garafolo reported. “Teams have called the Buccaneers to see if they’re interested in trading him. Amongst them I’m told are the Bills, the Bears, the 49ers, and three are few others but the Buccaneers continue to say internally, they are not trading Vita Vea.”
Garafolo further reported that Tampa Bay remains steadfast against any trade while keeping the lines of communication open on a potential new contract.
From the 49ers’ viewpoint, adding a player of Vea’s caliber would represent a significant upgrade along the interior defensive line. The veteran has started 107 of his 112 career games over eight seasons with Tampa Bay and has earned two Pro Bowl nods along with a Super Bowl championship.
Vea is set to earn approximately $18 million this season under his current deal. The market for top defensive tackles shifted recently when Philadelphia’s Jalen Carter signed a four-year, $152 million contract. Vea is believed to be seeking a long-term package that approaches that level of compensation.
Whether the Buccaneers ultimately meet those financial expectations or hold firm against moving him will determine if the 49ers and other interested clubs have a realistic path forward. For now, San Francisco continues to monitor the situation as part of its broader roster evaluation heading into the regular season.
The 49ers have long valued versatile, high-impact defensive linemen capable of disrupting opposing offenses. Vea’s track record of consistency and production aligns with that approach, even as the trade path appears blocked for the time being.
