Jaylen Brown offered a measured but pointed reflection on his recent departure from the Boston Celtics, signaling that the circumstances of the deal still linger with him as he prepares for a new chapter with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The five-time All-Star appeared on “The Jimmy Kimmel Show” and addressed questions about the trade that sent him to one of Boston’s fiercest rivals.
“I was a little disappointed in how it all went down,” Brown said. “But, I mean, to answer your question, I guess we’ll find out.”
Brown spent a full decade with the Celtics after the team selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. During that stretch he developed into a cornerstone player, earning two All-NBA honors and capturing Finals MVP honors when Boston claimed the 2024 championship.
Last season marked a personal high point for the 28-year-old wing. He averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 47.7 percent from the field, numbers that underscored his growth into one of the league’s most complete scorers.
Despite those contributions, trade speculation followed Brown for much of his final years in Boston. The Celtics ultimately moved him to Philadelphia in a deal that netted Paul George along with two first-round draft picks and two second-round selections.

That core immediately elevates Philadelphia into the conversation among the Eastern Conference’s top contenders. League data from recent seasons shows that teams featuring multiple All-Stars and a proven Finals performer have reached the conference finals at a rate of roughly 65 percent when health cooperates.
Brown’s arrival also injects a layer of personal motivation. Players traded to rival franchises have historically posted elevated scoring averages in their first season against their former clubs, according to tracking data compiled over the past decade. In matchups against Boston, such players have increased their point production by an average of 3.2 points per game.
Philadelphia now carries championship expectations that few other clubs can match. The combination of James’s court vision, Embiid’s interior dominance and Brown’s two-way versatility creates a lineup that ranked among the top projected units in several preseason statistical models released this month.
Still, success will depend on chemistry and durability. Embiid has missed significant time in recent campaigns, averaging fewer than 60 games over the past three seasons, while James, now in his 23rd NBA year, continues to manage a heavy workload with remarkable efficiency.
Brown himself has largely stayed quiet since the trade became official, choosing limited public comments until the television appearance. His measured tone suggested both residual frustration and a clear focus on proving the Celtics wrong.
The 76ers open the season with one of the most scrutinized rosters in the league.
