The NBA continues to dig into claims that the Los Angeles Clippers found a way around the salary cap by routing secret payments to forward Kawhi Leonard through endorsement deals that were never properly disclosed.
The league has not wrapped up its formal review of the matter. Earlier reports indicated the process could stretch well into the following year, especially after fresh details emerged tying Leonard to a scoreboard company.
Yet a recent account from SportsNet’s Michael Grange paints a different picture. According to his sources, the investigation has already moved past the stage of gathering basic facts.
“Per league sources, there’s a belief the investigation has already moved beyond its fact-finding stage and the parties involved — specifically the Clippers and the NBPA (which is monitoring the situation to see what if any consequences befall Leonard) — are working quietly to get the entire issue resolved, something [Adam] Silver hinted at back on July 14 when he last spoke publicly on the issue,” Grange wrote.
That quiet progress has led to speculation about how the situation will ultimately be settled. Grange offered a clear prediction on what he sees as the most probable result.
“The most likely outcome? A negotiated settlement where the NBA gets to enforce some version of its rules, Ballmer can save face and Leonard can play for the Raptors,” added Grange.
A potential trade that would send Leonard to the Toronto Raptors remains frozen while the league finishes its work. Both teams have had to put plans on hold until the questions surrounding the Clippers are answered.
It is still not clear whether the newest public findings about Leonard’s connection to Daktronics have been folded into the NBA’s file. An earlier report had already noted that a second no-show endorsement arrangement was under review.
“Whether Torre’s latest finding is new information to the NBA’s investigation or not — a report in The Athletic last month said a second no-show endorsement deal was already part of the investigation — the sense is that it won’t affect the next stage of the process, namely figuring out what the league is going to do with the information it has collected.
“An NBA spokesperson refused comment when reached by Sportsnet about the status of the investigation. A representative of the NBPA didn’t respond to a request for comment,” Grange wrote.
For Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, the episode has become a public test of how the franchise handles league rules. A settlement would allow the team to close the chapter without a drawn-out public fight while still accepting some form of accountability.
Leonard, meanwhile, would gain the chance to move forward with his career in Toronto if the deal is cleared. The Raptors have waited patiently, knowing the outcome depends on decisions made in the league office rather than on the court.
