The New York Giants selected Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft after trading up to secure him, a move widely viewed as addressing a long-standing need for a big-bodied outside threat.
At 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, Fields brought the physical profile the franchise had largely lacked since the Plaxico Burress era, offering size, contested-catch ability, and the potential to stretch the field.
Entering training camp, conventional wisdom placed the rookie toward the lower end of a crowded receiver room. The Giants had added free agents Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III, Odell Beckham Jr., and JuJu Smith-Schuster while retaining veteran Darius Slayton.
Expectations centered on Malik Nabers remaining the clear No. 1 option, with the remaining spots up for competition among more experienced players.
That outlook appears to be shifting. According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Fields has already shown enough to stake an early claim on a larger role.
“Fields has demonstrated an ability to make plays downfield, which could be his primary role as a rookie,” Duggan wrote. “Unlike Jalin Hyatt, whose speed made him a deep threat exclusively, the 6-foot-4, 222-pound Fields has the size to run underneath routes and use his physicality to make contested catches.
“With the Giants expected to lean heavily on two-tight end packages, Fields has made an early claim for the No. 2 receiver spot opposite Nabers.”
The development is notable not only for what it says about Fields but also for what it suggests about the rest of the group. Mooney arrives with a prior 1,000-yard season and represents the strongest free-agent candidate for significant snaps.
Slayton, a fixture since 2019, knows the offense and quarterback Jaxson Dart well, yet he struggled last season and is returning from sports hernia surgery that has slowed his start to camp.
Beckham, Austin, and Smith-Schuster offer name recognition and specific skill sets but have not yet separated themselves as clear starters opposite Nabers.
Whether Fields’ early momentum stems primarily from his own rapid adjustment or from limited standout performances elsewhere remains open to interpretation.
What is clear is that the Notre Dame product is forcing the coaching staff to reconsider the depth chart sooner than anticipated.
His combination of downfield production and physicality in intermediate areas gives the Giants a versatile piece that fits the projected two-tight-end heavy scheme, and the early returns have been strong enough to place him firmly in the conversation for a starting role when the regular season begins.
