The Golden State Warriors find themselves at a familiar crossroads as the 2026 season approaches. With Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody sidelined indefinitely, the franchise that has long relied on creativity and star power now risks sliding back toward play-in contention.
That vulnerability has renewed interest in a familiar name: Michael Porter Jr., the sharpshooting wing whose future with the Brooklyn Nets remains unsettled.
Sai Mohan of Heavy.com notes that the Warriors were already linked to Porter ahead of last season’s trade deadline, especially after Butler’s season-ending ACL injury.
Brooklyn’s asking price of multiple first-round picks ultimately proved too steep, and reports suggested that head coach Steve Kerr was not particularly enthusiastic about the addition. But circumstances have changed.
Porter is entering the final year of a contract that pays him $40.8 million, turning him into a relatively low-risk, high-upside rental who could provide immediate scoring punch.
One hypothetical framework outlined by Mohan pairs Porter with veteran guard Terance Mann heading to Golden State in exchange for Butler and a 2030 first-round pick that is protected in the top 20.
Mann brings two-way reliability and a history of playoff impact, most memorably his 39-point explosion for the Clippers in the 2021 Western Conference semifinals. Because the outgoing draft selection carries meaningful protection, the Warriors would assume limited long-term risk while still positioning themselves for the post-Stephen Curry era.
Stylistically, Porter’s game aligns unusually well with Golden State’s offensive identity. A premier movement shooter, he thrives when sprinting off pindowns or rising up for contested jumpers in transition.
In his first season with the Nets he averaged a career-high 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists while knocking down 3.4 threes per game. Inserting him into a starting group alongside Curry, Kristaps Porzingis, Draymond Green and Yaxel Lendeborg would create a lineup rich in size and perimeter shooting.
For a franchise that has nothing to lose by testing a one-year experiment, the upside is clear. Mann’s remaining year on a modest contract further softens the commitment; he could later be moved for future assets if the fit does not hold.
From Brooklyn’s perspective the deal also carries logic. The Nets are reportedly eyeing the 2027 free-agent class that could include Nikola Jokić, Karl-Anthony Towns, Kyrie Irving and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Clearing Porter’s salary, along with Mann’s, would expand the cap flexibility needed to pursue multiple stars while continuing to develop their young core. Butler himself is scheduled to come off the books the following summer, further easing the path toward a reset.
Whether the Warriors ultimately revisit their earlier hesitation remains to be seen. Yet the combination of urgent roster needs, Porter’s expiring contract and a protected draft asset creates a scenario that, on paper at least, offers both sides a pathway forward.
