The New York Yankees completed a series of roster adjustments ahead of their series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals, reflecting the ongoing reshuffling that has defined their season amid injuries and the approaching trade deadline.
Central to the moves was the addition of newly acquired first baseman Luis Garcia Jr., who arrived in New York following the previous day’s trade with the Washington Nationals.
Garcia has already met with the media and been photographed in Yankees gear, though it remains unclear whether he will appear in the starting lineup for the Cardinals series.
His arrival fills a clear need as the club looks to stabilize its offense during a stretch without three-time American League MVP Aaron Judge.
To address a vacancy in the bullpen, the Yankees have announced they have promoted right-hander Kervin Castro from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Castro’s call-up provides additional depth for a pitching staff that has faced its own challenges throughout the campaign.
Making room for these additions, the team optioned versatile infielder and outfielder Max Schuemann back to Triple-A. Schuemann had offered solid production off the bench after being called up in the wake of Giancarlo Stanton’s calf injury.
Originally obtained from the Athletics in an offseason deal, he compiled a .694 OPS with two home runs and eight RBI across 40 games.
His value stemmed largely from his defensive flexibility, as he saw action at all three outfield spots as well as shortstop, second base, and third base during his time with the big-league club.
These transactions come as the Yankees continue searching for ways to bolster their lineup before the 6 p.m. trade deadline on Monday.
With Judge sidelined and offensive production lagging, the organization is expected to pursue at least one or two additional hitters in the final hours before the deadline closes.
Garcia’s presence represents an early step in that process, but further moves appear likely as the club attempts to regain momentum in the American League East race.
