The Seattle Seahawks have bolstered their defensive backfield just ahead of training camp, signing former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Brandon Johnson.

The move comes at a critical time as the team prepares for the start of camp on Saturday and looks to address depth concerns in the secondary following an injury-related placement on the physically unable to perform list.

Johnson, an undrafted free agent who originally entered the league with the Eagles, brings a combination of speed and potential to Seattle.

After spending most of the 2025 season on Philadelphia’s practice squad, he earned opportunities in three games, including one start. The Eagles waived him in June, leaving him to explore opportunities elsewhere before he landed with the Seahawks.

Prior to his professional career, Johnson’s collegiate path showed steady development. He began at Duke before transferring to Oregon for his final season.

There, he earned All-Big Ten honorable mention honors, starting eight of 14 games and recording 45 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, five pass breakups, and one interception. His performance highlighted his ability to contribute in coverage and against the run.

During his time with Philadelphia, Johnson drew positive attention for his rapid progress. Observers noted his transition from practice squad to active game-day contributions as evidence of strong development for the 5-foot-10, 185-pound defensive back.

In limited snaps, including his NFL debut, he showed promise as a speedy cover man. Eagles veteran Michael Carter also praised Johnson’s dedication, highlighting his eagerness to learn, consistent questioning, and strong work habits—qualities that suggest he could carve out a role on Seattle’s roster.

The timing of the signing aligns with the Seahawks’ need for additional bodies in the secondary. The placement of safety Nick Emmanwori on the PUP list created an immediate opening, and while the long-term outlook for Emmanwori remains uncertain, the addition of Johnson provides flexibility as coaches evaluate the group during camp and preseason.

Reports indicate the decision regarding Emmanwori may be precautionary, but having extra depth ensures the team can manage practice and joint sessions effectively.

For Johnson, this represents another opportunity to prove himself at the professional level. As an undrafted player who has already shown flashes in limited action, his signing reflects Seattle’s strategy of acquiring versatile, high-effort defensive backs to compete for roster spots.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how he performs once pads come on and the competitive battles intensify in training camp.
