Omaha authorities carried out a significant rescue effort on Thursday after receiving an anonymous tip about troubling conditions at a residence in the western part of the city.

The Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) secured a search warrant and responded to a property near 195th and Pacific streets, not far from the Shadow Ridge Country Club.

What investigators discovered inside and around the home was startling: a wide variety of creatures living in circumstances far below acceptable standards.

Among the roughly 60 animals taken into custody were common pets like dogs and cats, as well as farm animals including ducks, geese, ponies, goats, and donkeys.

The group also featured more unusual species such as an emu, several alpacas, and even a zebra.

According to the Humane Society, many of the animals appeared emaciated and were kept in unsuitable environments.

Some of the larger livestock had hooves that had grown excessively long, pointing to a clear lack of proper care and basic maintenance.

Officials moved quickly to remove the animals from the site. Most are now being housed and provided with immediate veterinary attention at NHS facilities, while those requiring more specialized care—particularly the exotic species—will be transferred to partner organizations equipped to handle their unique needs.

The operation highlights the challenges animal welfare groups face when dealing with individuals who take on far more animals than they can responsibly manage, especially when exotic or large species are involved.

Keeping a zebra or emu in a residential setting raises serious questions about zoning regulations, safety, and long-term animal welfare that authorities will likely continue to examine.

This remains a developing situation, and further details about any potential charges or the full scope of the investigation are expected to emerge in the coming days.

The Nebraska Humane Society has emphasized its commitment to ensuring all the rescued animals receive the care they need to recover.
