The New York Yankees suddenly find themselves searching for additional starting pitching depth after Carlos Rodon suffered left elbow inflammation on Friday. This latest setback adds pressure to a rotation already navigating several challenges this season. Team officials are now focusing intently on recovery timelines for key arms to stabilize the group moving forward.
Fortunately, reliable veteran Max Fried continues to show encouraging signs during his rehabilitation process. His return could provide a timely lift to the pitching staff. Yankees manager Aaron Boone updated reporters on Sunday, noting that Fried had faced hitters once again at Yankee Stadium and tossed 36 pitches in the session.
Boone indicated that Fried is scheduled for another live bullpen appearance on Thursday or Friday. Following that outing, the left-hander will likely begin a formal rehab assignment with the minors. This structured progression suggests Fried could rejoin the active roster in the coming weeks if all goes smoothly.
The Yankees’ current starting rotation ranks fourth in Major League Baseball with a 3.54 earned run average. Bringing Fried back into the mix would significantly strengthen an already competitive unit and help address recent inconsistencies on the mound. His presence would allow the team to redistribute workloads more effectively across the staff.
Fried has been sidelined since May 14 because of a bone bruise in his left elbow. In the 10 starts he made before the injury, he posted a solid 3.21 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP over 61.2 innings pitched. Those numbers underscore his value as a consistent performer capable of logging quality innings.
During his first year with the Yankees last season, Fried delivered an outstanding campaign. He finished with a 19-5 record, a 2.86 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 189 strikeouts across 195.1 innings in 32 starts. His performance proved especially crucial when Gerrit Cole missed the entire season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
This year, Fried’s injury occurred just before Cole made his return from the injured list on May 22. Since coming back, Cole has recorded a 4.01 ERA through eight starts. Together, the two pitchers could anchor the rotation effectively once both are fully healthy.
Upon Fried’s activation, the Yankees are expected to feature a formidable top trio alongside emerging talent Cam Schlittler. This combination would create a dominant front end of the rotation, providing stability and high-end stuff that opponents would struggle to handle on a nightly basis.
At the upcoming trade deadline, New York could explore options such as acquiring back-to-back American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. However, landing Skubal would demand a substantial package of top-tier prospects.
With Fried nearing a return in the next couple of weeks, the urgency for such a move may diminish, provided the rest of the staff stays healthy.
The Yankees have endured a difficult stretch without Fried and slugger Aaron Judge, who has been out since May with a rib fracture. June proved particularly tough, as the team posted a 12-14 record. More recently, they have dropped eight of their last nine games. As a result, New York now sits four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings.
A healthy rotation led by Fried and Cole could spark a much-needed turnaround in the second half.
