Indiana Fever Coach Delivers Concerning Caitlin Clark Injury News

Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) reacts Saturday, May 9, 2026, after losing the Fever’s season opener game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Dallas Wings defeated the Indiana Fever, 107-104.

Caitlin Clark has delivered outstanding performances for the Indiana Fever throughout the 2026 WNBA season, posting impressive averages of 21.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 8.2 assists across 17 games. Her contributions place her among the league’s elite, ranking tied for third in scoring and second in assists, which underscores her pivotal role nearly at the midpoint of the campaign.

Despite this strong showing, a setback occurred when Clark sustained an injury in a contest against the Phoenix Mercury on June 24. The incident happened in the second quarter after she landed awkwardly on Valeriane Ayayi’s foot during a closeout, causing her to tweak her back.

Although Clark managed to remain on the court initially, it soon became evident that the discomfort was affecting her play. The Fever coaching staff decided to remove her in the third quarter, and she did not return for the remainder of the matchup.

The talented 24-year-old guard subsequently sat out Indiana’s recent game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. As the team gears up for an important clash with the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, her availability continues to be in doubt.

Head coach Stephanie White provided some insight into the situation, noting that “it’s still too early” to say for certain whether Clark will be active against the Aces.

In the days leading up to the Aces game, Clark has been absent from the Fever’s full team practices on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to White, the guard has instead focused on individual workouts supervised by the team’s training staff.

White updated the media on Wednesday, indicating positive signs in Clark’s recovery process while sharing that she is “every day is a little bit better.” At the same time, the coach highlighted the unpredictable nature of such injuries.

White elaborated on the challenges involved, stating, “For those who’ve never had back issues, every day can be something different. You can feel really good in practices or workouts or warmups, then you go to bed at night and you wake up and it’s different. Or if you’re sitting home watching television, you can get up and it’s different. The back is a nagging thing that manifests itself in different ways.”

Observers should recognize that this latest problem connects to ongoing back concerns Clark has faced earlier in the year. In the Fever’s season-opening game versus the Dallas Wings, she briefly exited to receive treatment and adjustments for her back.

Additionally, Clark was unexpectedly sidelined from an earlier matchup against the Portland Fire due to the same persistent issue. These prior instances suggest a pattern that could influence her long-term availability if not managed carefully.

When questioned about any connection between the recent injury and previous back problems, White confirmed the link. She explained, “It’s not a new thing, I think it’s a re-aggravation.”

As the Fever navigate this period without their star playmaker, fans and analysts alike will monitor developments closely. Clark’s ability to return healthy could prove crucial for Indiana’s competitive standing in the league standings.

The coming days will offer more clarity on whether she can suit up against a formidable opponent like the Las Vegas Aces.
