When Steve Cohen bought the New York Mets back in November 2020, it was supposed to represent the start of something special. Instead, it has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

After spending nearly $800 million to sign Juan Soto away from the New York Yankees in December 2024, the Mets won just 83 games and missed the playoffs the following season.

This year, they have gone 34-48 and are in last place in the NL East by a country mile.

New York’s ineptitude resulting in the firing of manager Carlos Mendoza earlier this week, drawing the ire of fans who think Cohen needs to take more responsibility.

Well-known New York radio personality Mike Francesa also chimed in on Cohen, absolutely shredding the billionaire owner for shirking accountability.

“The idea that you’re not going to have accountability on this franchise is a joke,” Francesa said. “I’m going right past Mendoza, because I don’t care, he’s small potatoes. I’m going right past [David] Stearns because in the grand scheme of things, he’s small potatoes. And [I’m going] right to the owner.”

The Mets have made just two playoff appearances since Cohen took over, this in spite of regularly having one of the top payrolls in all of baseball. They’ve won 90 games just once, which came in 2022 when they went 102-60, only to get bounced in the Wild Card Series.

“The owner, going on five-and-a-half years ago, with a big wallet and a big mouth and made big promises, and now he’s in the witness protection program,” Francesa added. “Doesn’t work that way. Get off your rea rend. Get up and stand up. Face the music. Get into a press conference, make some statements about your team, and answer some questions from the media about where you’re headed.”

The Mets added big names like Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta and Devin Williams during the offseason while also acquiring other supplementary pieces such as Jorge Polanco, Luis Robert Jr. and Luke Weaver.

It hasn’t worked, as New York has been one of the worst teams in baseball all season long.

The Mets have collected just two World Series titles since becoming an MLB franchise in 1962. They have not won a championship since 1986.

New York is expected to sell off some pieces before the trade deadline, which is on Aug. 3.
