A former FBI agent has offered a pointed hypothesis about the masked figure seen on Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera, intensifying public scrutiny of the still-unsolved disappearance of the mother of TODAY Show host Savannah Guthrie.

Nancy Guthrie, aged 84, vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1. As the search nears the five-month milestone on July 1, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or persons of interest. Early in the probe, the FBI released doorbell video footage and still images showing an armed, masked individual on the porch who appeared to tamper with the camera while wearing gloves and carrying a backpack with a visible gun holster.

Investigators collected DNA from the gloves left at the scene and ran it through the FBI’s national database, known as CODIS, but found no matches. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, working alongside federal agents, indicated it would turn to investigative genetic genealogy for further analysis of the sample. So far, officials have released no information on whether that method has generated any promising leads.

Jennifer Coffindaffer, a retired FBI agent with 25 years of experience, has closely followed developments in the case and frequently shares her observations on X. In her latest post dated Thursday, June 18, she voiced strong dissatisfaction with how the investigation is being handled.

She began by stating, “[Law Enforcement] and the FBI are making no sense.” Coffindaffer then pressed for more transparency, asking, “Where is the enhanced photo of Porch guy. It exists. Why not share with the public for their help?”

She continued her critique of current public appeals by questioning, “Billboards: Why is Nancy’s face on them? Put Porch Guy’s face and add Spanish if you want more of the public’s help. Or do you know who porch Guy is?”

Drawing from her extensive background in federal investigations, Coffindaffer suggested that authorities may already have identified the individual. She asserted that law enforcement “knows who is responsible or the ball has been dropped.” The former agent stressed that if uncertainty remains, officials should actively enlist broader public assistance to move the case forward.

Beyond the porch footage, Coffindaffer raised concerns about potential vehicle activity near the residence and questioned why, after several months, no meaningful details have emerged regarding traffic camera or neighboring Ring and Nest doorbell recordings. She also pointed out the limited scope of physical searches, noting that efforts essentially stopped after the second day, and highlighted the absence of early coordination with Mexican authorities.

In a direct appeal at the end of her post, Coffindaffer called for immediate changes, demanding, “Release the enhanced photos. Change the billboards. Commence searching the desert.”

Her comments arrive amid fresh attention on a tip received by the Mexico-based volunteer search group Buscando Corazones. The organization reported an anonymous lead claiming Nancy Guthrie may have been buried in one of the streams in the Mariposa region of Mexico. Although earlier searches by the volunteers turned up nothing, the group has committed to returning and checking additional sites based on the new information.

On June 11, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement addressing the tip.

“We are aware of reports regarding an anonymous tip related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation that was provided to a group in Mexico. At this time, we have not been contacted by Mexican authorities.”

The department closed by reaffirming its commitment, stating, “This investigation remains active and ongoing, and we will continue to follow up on any credible information.”

The case continues to draw significant attention as Nancy Guthrie’s family and the public await concrete progress. With questions mounting about evidence handling, public engagement strategies, and cross-border coordination, pressure remains on investigators to provide clearer updates and expand their efforts in the months ahead.
