The Kansas City Police Department is actively calling on residents to assist in locating a suspect believed to be responsible for a series of shootings that occurred Tuesday evening. As of Thursday afternoon, authorities throughout the region remain engaged in an intensive search for Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, who faces charges linked to multiple incidents that left four people injured and one person dead.

Law enforcement officials describe the suspect as armed and dangerous, prompting a widespread manhunt that began shortly after the attacks. Police have mobilized significant resources in their efforts to apprehend him.

“KCPD officers and detectives are using all investigative resources available to them,” said Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesperson. “Including other local, state and federal partnerships to search for Sanchez-Munoz. Detectives have received some information from the public.”

The rapid sequence of shootings unfolded across several key locations in the Kansas City area during a brief time frame Tuesday evening. Incidents were reported at Interstate 670 and Wyoming Street, Interstate 70 and Paseo Boulevard, I-70 and Prospect Avenue, and Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue.

These events have heightened concerns among local residents and visitors alike, especially given the proximity to major public gatherings.

One of the victims currently recovering from his injuries had been working as an Uber driver, transporting fans toward Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium for a World Cup match on Tuesday evening. Authorities verified this detail on Wednesday. The attacks took place roughly eight miles away from the stadium, which is scheduled to host multiple World Cup games throughout the tournament.

In addition to the injured individuals, another man lost his life after his vehicle crashed at Truman Road and Bennington Avenue. Police spokesperson Capt. Becchina confirmed on Wednesday that this fatality is also believed to be connected to the same suspect. The circumstances surrounding each shooting continue to be examined closely by investigators.

Even before Tuesday’s violent events, Sanchez-Munoz was already subject to an active arrest warrant issued in Wyandotte County. The warrant stemmed from a prior aggravated assault charge and included a substantial $100,000 bond. This outstanding legal matter has added another layer to the urgency of the current pursuit.

Following the initial reports of the shootings, officers encountered two separate standoff situations involving the suspect. The first occurred Tuesday night, and a second extended overnight into Wednesday morning. Both efforts ended without contact with Sanchez-Munoz, leading authorities to intensify their search across multiple sites.

Overnight developments provided detectives with leads pointing to a specific residence in the 1600 block of Kensington.

“Detectives investigating the case overnight developed information that led to a house in the 1600 block of Kensington,” Becchina said. “Prior to detectives searching the residence for any evidence, they wanted to ensure that it was safe, and the wanted suspect was not inside.”

Officers collaborated with SWAT team members to conduct a careful tactical operation at the property.

“There was never any contact with the suspect and the residence was deemed clear as of about 6 a.m. this morning,” Becchina said. “The tactical operation concluded at that time.”

Detectives have since begun processing the location for potential evidence while continuing broader searches elsewhere.

Earlier in the sequence, Sanchez-Munoz had been traced to a home in Independence on Tuesday night, where the first standoff unfolded. That property, located in the 700 block of South Brookside Avenue, is considered his primary residence.

During the incident, the house caught fire around midnight Wednesday, drawing a response from the Independence Fire Department. Officials have not determined whether the suspect deliberately started the blaze.

The Kansas City Police Department continues to treat the case with high priority, urging immediate action from anyone who spots the suspect. Anyone who sees Sanchez-Munoz is asked to call 911 immediately, Becchina said.

Tips regarding his possible whereabouts can also be shared anonymously through the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers hotline at 816-474-8477.
