Mets’ Stance on Freddy Peralta Appears to Be Taking Shape

The New York Mets entered the season with high expectations after an aggressive winter of roster building. Big-name acquisitions were meant to transform them into legitimate championship threats, yet the club has struggled mightily and failed to meet those lofty standards.

Instead of contending at the top of the standings, the team has encountered consistent setbacks that have dimmed its outlook for the current campaign. While several core contributors remain locked into long-term deals, one notable addition stands out as a likely departure candidate before the trade deadline.

Freddy Peralta, the right-handed pitcher acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers, appears headed for a new uniform by the end of July.

According to a recent ESPN analysis by Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel published on Wednesday, the probability of Peralta being dealt sits at approximately 90 percent. The Mets invested significant prospect capital to secure his services during the offseason. With the campaign unfolding in disappointing fashion, the organization must now focus on salvaging as much return as possible through a potential transaction.

“Teams are thrilled that Peralta has gotten off to a middling start with the Mets,” Passan and McDaniel wrote. “Unless New York goes on a run, it has to trade the 30-year-old. Why? Because of the Mets’ spending over the luxury tax, the best compensatory draft pick they can reap for him comes after the fourth round.”

Peralta established himself as a formidable starting pitcher during his time with Milwaukee, delivering consistent dominance that many clubs still view favorably. That track record offers a compelling narrative for interested parties evaluating his future contributions, especially as the postseason approaches.

“Even with his strikeout rate dipping below one per inning, Peralta is still plenty capable of throwing seven shutout innings in a postseason game — and that makes him worth a much better prospect than what New York could get with a fourth-rounder,” the ESPN duo wrote. “Even better: Peralta is making $8 million this season, an awfully attractive figure for low-payroll teams.”

His affordable salary enhances his appeal in a market where many franchises operate under tight financial constraints. This combination of proven talent and manageable cost could spark meaningful interest from various contenders and rebuilding squads alike.

Passan and McDaniel identified a wide array of potential landing spots, including the Cleveland Guardians, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays, and Atlanta Braves. Such a broad list of suitors increases the chances of competitive offers emerging in the coming weeks.

At this stage, generating a bidding environment represents one of the more favorable outcomes available to the Mets. A well-executed trade could help replenish the farm system while providing flexibility for future roster decisions as the franchise navigates its current challenges. The situation underscores the unpredictable nature of baseball seasons, where even the most promising offseasons can yield unexpected results on the field.

For Peralta and the Mets, the focus now shifts toward maximizing value in what looks like an impending separation.
