The Philadelphia Eagles appear poised to part ways with star wide receiver A.J. Brown through a trade, with the New England Patriots emerging as the frontrunner to acquire the talented pass-catcher.
As speculation swirls around the potential move, the approaching June 1 deadline has intensified discussions across the league, putting both organizations under the microscope as they weigh the strategic implications of such a blockbuster deal.
Patriots defensive standout Milton Williams finds himself in a unique position as the rumors continue to build. Having played alongside Brown during his time in Philadelphia, the defensive lineman admits he is fighting the temptation to lobby his team’s decision-makers directly. Williams, eager to reunite with his former teammate on a new squad, recognizes the impact Brown could make in New England’s offense.
When asked about the urge to influence the front office, Williams offered a candid response during a recent press conference.
“Definitely,” Williams said. “You see the noise, and you see it. Shoot, hell of a player. He can definitely help our team. But they don’t pay me to [be the GM].”
The 27-year-old Williams, selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Louisiana Tech, began his professional journey with the Eagles. He enjoyed a solid four-year tenure in Philadelphia, during which he steadily developed into a reliable contributor on the defensive line. His performance reached new heights in the 2024 campaign, helping elevate his stock as he headed into free agency.
That breakout season saw Williams record 5.0 sacks, 24 tackles, and 10 quarterback hits while playing a key role in the Eagles’ postseason run. He added seven tackles, two quarterback hits, and 2.0 sacks across the playoffs, culminating in a Super Bowl victory for Philadelphia. Those accomplishments set the stage for his next chapter when he signed a lucrative four-year, $104 million contract with the Patriots, shattering the franchise’s previous annual salary benchmarks for the position.
Since joining New England, Williams has continued to produce at a high level. Across 12 regular-season games, he tallied 29 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and eight quarterback hits. He remained impactful in the playoffs with another 3.0 sacks, marking his second consecutive trip to the Super Bowl. His consistency and leadership have quickly made him a cornerstone of the Patriots’ defensive front.
Meanwhile, A.J. Brown has established himself as one of the league’s premier wide receivers during his time with the Eagles. Over a four-year span in Philadelphia that was part of a broader seven-season career, he appeared in 62 games, hauling in 339 receptions for 5,034 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns. Brown earned multiple Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro honors, showcasing his elite abilities on a consistent basis.
His contributions proved vital in big moments, including two Super Bowl appearances with the Eagles. In the 2024 championship run, Brown delivered 163 yards and two touchdowns, emerging as a standout performer in the team’s victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. His presence in the red zone and ability to stretch the field made him a central figure in Philadelphia’s offensive success.
Despite the clear mutual interest and Brown’s proven track record, negotiations between the Eagles and Patriots have encountered hurdles. Reports from late May indicated that the asking price remains a significant sticking point, particularly with Philadelphia seeking a first-round draft pick in return. New England, for its part, has shown reluctance to meet that demand, leading to a cautious approach from both sides.
As the calendar flips toward early June, momentum appears to be building once again. According to multiple sources, including Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, a trade agreement could materialize as soon as next week, potentially on or shortly after the critical June 1 date.
If the deal comes together, it would reshape the landscape for both franchises heading into the new season, pairing Brown with a fresh opportunity in New England while allowing the Eagles to reset their roster priorities.
