The New York Yankees are searching for solutions to stabilize their inconsistent bullpen, and one potential option involves reuniting with a pitcher who has prior ties to the organization. Fortunately for the team, an experienced arm could become available without any financial commitment.
The Minnesota Twins recently parted ways with veteran right-hander Matt Bowman following the activation of a contractual provision. This development opens the door for Bowman to join a new club at no cost, making him an intriguing low-risk addition for teams in need of bullpen depth.
Insider Jon Heyman shared details of the transaction on X, noting the circumstances behind the move.
“Matt Bowman was given his release by Twins, likely due to 40-man issues. Bowman posted a 1.69 ERA with 25 strikeouts and 6 walks in 21.1 innings while inducing groundballs at a 54.5% rate with AAA St. Paul. MLB deal elsewhere probably awaits,” Heyman wrote.
Bowman has demonstrated strong command and effectiveness during his time in the minors this year. His ability to generate ground balls stands out as a valuable trait, particularly for a Yankees squad looking to limit extra-base hits and keep innings manageable.
One MLB analyst is advocating for New York to take a serious look at bringing Bowman back into the fold. With the bullpen serving as a constant point of concern, adding a reliable option like him could provide much-needed stability without disrupting the roster significantly.
Chris Landers of FanSided highlighted Bowman’s ground-ball tendencies as a key asset that aligns with the Yankees’ current requirements.
“While he doesn’t throw particularly hard (sitting in the low 90s with his sinker) or miss a ton of bats, he brings one very specific skill to the table: He induces a ton of ground balls. His 53.5% career ground-ball rate is well above the big-league average of 44.2%, and that number has been even higher at Triple-A St. Paul this season,” Landers wrote.
Landers emphasized how Bowman’s approach could immediately improve the unit’s overall reliability.
“That might not sound like the flashiest profile, but at this point, the Yankees don’t need flashy; they just need competent. Someone that Aaron Boone can hand the ball to in innings five through seven and be confident that he can get outs consistently.”
The current bullpen configuration has featured frequent changes and overuse of certain arms, creating fatigue concerns heading into the later stages of the schedule. By incorporating Bowman, the team might elevate its baseline performance and reduce pressure on other relievers who have shouldered heavy workloads.
“Bowman can throw strikes, keep the ball on the ground, and at least raise the floor a bit to prevent guys like Tim Hill and Brent Headrick from being worked into the ground before we even get to the All-Star break. At this point, it’s safe to assume that big changes are coming to the Yankee bullpen at the trade deadline,” Landers added.
Bowman originally broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals back in 2016 and spent time with the Yankees during the 2023 campaign, where he made three appearances. In those outings, he encountered difficulties, surrendering four earned runs across four innings for a 9.00 ERA. Across his entire big-league tenure to date, he holds an 8-14 record with a 4.38 ERA over seven seasons of experience.
Re-signing Bowman would represent a calculated gamble for the Yankees, leveraging his familiarity with the organization and his recent minor-league dominance.
