The Minnesota Vikings enter the 2026 NFL season with an intriguing but unsettled quarterback picture that centers primarily on the immediate campaign ahead. With limited long-term money tied up at the position, the team has flexibility but also faces pressure to identify a reliable starter quickly.
Kyler Murray signed a one-year pact, while J.J. McCarthy remains on his rookie contract, leaving Minnesota without heavy financial obligations to either signal-caller competing for the top spot. This setup allows the franchise to evaluate both players thoroughly during the upcoming year without being locked into major commitments beyond the short term.
In the most favorable outcome, either Murray or McCarthy seizes the starting role outright, delivers strong performances, and guides the Vikings back into the postseason. That player would then emerge as the clear franchise leader for seasons to come, providing stability at the game’s most critical position.
Yet the opposite scenario remains a real concern. Murray could bring his previous inconsistencies from Arizona to his new environment, failing to recapture the form that once made him a high draft pick. At the same time, McCarthy might continue to show the shortcomings that prompted Minnesota to add veteran competition in the first place.
Should neither quarterback distinguish himself over the course of the season, the Vikings would face the difficult task of rebuilding their quarterback room from scratch once again. Such a development would force the organization to reassess its entire approach to the position heading into 2027.
This uncertainty has prompted speculation about potential external solutions. One prominent suggestion involves turning to a proven star whose own future appears murky after the current year.
FanSided’s Alicia de Artola views the Vikings as a strong potential landing spot for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. She highlighted the opportunity in a May 9 piece, writing: “The Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray to a one-year deal and look all set to continue their pattern of letting Kevin O’Connell work his magic on a distressed asset.”
De Artola drew a clear distinction between Murray and Jackson, arguing that Minnesota could aim higher.
“Murray isn’t Jackson though. Instead of restoring a piece of furniture they found in a back alley, Minnesota could try bringing in an actual star and reopening their Super Bowl window.”
She emphasized the value of head coach Kevin O’Connell.
“O’Connell is too good a head coach to let the Vikings slip into one of the draft slots that could give them a franchise QB. Going out and getting him a readymade one could actually give the team the boost they need to contend.”
Jackson carries a substantial $84.49 million cap figure for next season, ranking as the third-largest in the league, and he is seeking a new long-term agreement. The Ravens may hesitate to extend him further depending on how 2026 unfolds, opening the door for a potential trade.
A move to Minnesota could appeal to Jackson because of the offensive weapons already in place. De Artola pointed out the attractive supporting cast, particularly the presence of standout receivers.
Still, any major decision would depend on the Vikings first establishing clearer long-term leadership. Until a general manager is hired, the team’s strategic direction remains somewhat unclear.
“If I’m Jackson, I’m looking at the Vikings and salivating,” de Artola wrote. “A QB whisperer like O’Connell? A receiving corps led by Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison? Sign me up. Would the Vikings actually bite? Well, they have to actually hire a GM first, so Jackson may have to keep dreaming.”
For the time being, Minnesota must focus on the present season while managing its resources carefully. The club gained some salary cap breathing room after dealing Jonathan Greenard during the 2026 NFL Draft. Following earlier aggressive spending, the Vikings now seem intent on exercising greater discipline with their financial decisions.
The coming months will reveal whether the current quarterback competition produces a long-term answer or simply adds another item to the new general manager’s agenda in 2027. How the situation resolves could shape the franchise’s trajectory for years ahead.
