The San Francisco 49ers have decided to maintain control over wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk instead of releasing him outright. By keeping the situation unresolved, the team continues to explore possibilities for a trade that could bring value in return for the player’s services.

Even though Aiyuk sat out the entire 2025 NFL season, the organization shows no intention of allowing another franchise to sign him without compensation. This approach leaves the door open for potential deals while preventing a cost-free acquisition by rival teams.

Reports have highlighted the Washington Commanders as one squad showing interest in the talented pass-catcher.

As organized team activities and mandatory minicamps approach, the landscape around Aiyuk remains largely unchanged. NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Matt Maiocco delivered a timely update that sheds light on the current standoff.

“Nothing has changed in the Brandon Aiyuk saga since Dec. 13. That was the day the San Francisco 49ers placed him on the reserve/left squad list, which officially ended his season last year,” Maiocco said on May 10. “He remains on that list, and the 49ers still hold his rights.“

“There is no chance he plays another game for the San Francisco 49ers, and the team is simply waiting to see whether any organization is willing to step up with a trade offer. He is still under contract, but he will not play again for the 49ers, and the organization is not expected to pay him further for the remainder of his NFL career.”

Maiocco’s insights emphasize that the 49ers are playing a patient game. The team appears committed to securing meaningful assets rather than parting ways without a return on their investment. This strategy has placed Aiyuk in a state of uncertainty as the new league year progresses.

“At this point, nothing has changed. He is essentially in limbo, and there has been no clear indication of his desire or readiness to return, either from a health standpoint or a mindset perspective.“

“He has not spoken publicly about his situation. While there has been reported interest from the Washington Commanders, no team has made a serious enough offer to acquire his rights from the 49ers.”

The absence of substantial trade proposals suggests a classic standoff. San Francisco demands appropriate draft capital or equivalent value, while interested clubs hesitate to commit significant resources. This dynamic has prolonged the impasse surrounding the wide receiver’s future.

The potential fit in Washington stands out because of Aiyuk’s prior college connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels. Reuniting the pair could strengthen the Commanders’ receiving corps and provide an immediate boost to their offense. Yet, without a firm offer on the table, that reunion remains speculative at best.

If the Commanders ultimately pass on pursuing Aiyuk through a trade, they have other avenues to bolster their wide receiver room. Several experienced veterans remain available in the open market, offering flexible options without requiring the surrender of high draft picks. Local radio analyst Kevin Sheehan from The Team 980 has suggested Stefon Diggs as a strong alternative for Washington.

Adding a proven performer like Diggs could address similar needs while avoiding the complications tied to Aiyuk’s ongoing contractual situation with the 49ers.

As the offseason advances, all parties involved continue to navigate this delicate balance between patience and opportunity. The 49ers hold firm on their position, leaving Aiyuk’s next chapter waiting to be written through a potential trade or further developments in the weeks ahead.
