The Philadelphia Eagles are heading into a pivotal offseason with plenty of questions to resolve after a disappointing playoff exit.
Fresh off their Super Bowl LIX victory the previous year, the team secured a postseason berth but suffered a surprising home loss in the wild-card round. The atmosphere around the organization felt off, prompting discussions about necessary adjustments to reclaim dominance in the NFC.
Trade speculation has centered on standout wide receiver A.J. Brown, creating uncertainty about the team’s receiving corps. Should the Eagles move on from Brown, finding a suitable replacement to match his production would become an immediate priority.
Even if he remains on the roster, Philadelphia faces other pressing areas that require attention through free agency or the draft.
Beyond the wide receiver position, the Eagles could benefit from reinforcements at outside cornerback to strengthen their secondary coverage. Adding another capable pass rusher would provide more options and depth on the defensive line.
Additionally, bolstering the offensive line with reliable depth pieces could help protect the quarterback and sustain the running game.
ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz recently shared his projections for ideal free-agent fits for each NFL team ahead of the 2026 offseason. He established clear guidelines for the exercise: assigning only one player per team, limiting each player to one destination, and excluding any potential re-signings of current players.
For the Eagles, Schatz highlighted Seattle Seahawks edge defender Boye Mafe as the top potential addition. This suggestion aligns with Philadelphia’s need for enhanced edge-rushing talent to complement their existing group.
“The Eagles could use more help on the edge to rotate with Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt, and Mafe had an outstanding season for the Super Bowl champions in 2025,” Schatz wrote.
Schatz elaborated on Mafe’s performance, noting that while his sack total was modest, his overall impact stood out.
“Although Mafe had only two sacks, he added 33 pressures,” he continued. “His 18.7% pass rush win rate was eighth among edge rushers and his 11.4% pressure rate was 17th. Mafe is quick and still in his prime, turning 28 in late November.”
Mafe, originally selected by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2022 draft out of Minnesota, brings valuable experience despite not always being a full-time starter. In the 2025 season, he recorded 31 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, and five passes defensed while contributing to Seattle’s Super Bowl-winning campaign.
The Seahawks employed a rotational approach along the edge, which limited Mafe’s snaps but allowed him to showcase efficiency in limited opportunities. His ability to generate consistent pressure without relying solely on sacks demonstrates a high-level disruptive presence that could translate well to a more prominent role.
Looking back, Mafe enjoyed a breakout showing in 2023, accumulating 52 tackles, nine sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and six passes defensed. That production underscores his upside when given increased responsibilities, making him an intriguing target for teams like the Eagles seeking to elevate their pass rush.
As Philadelphia evaluates its roster moves, adding a player of Mafe’s caliber could provide the rotational boost needed to keep defenses guessing and sustain momentum throughout games.
With free agency approaching, decisions in this area will play a key role in determining whether the Eagles can bounce back strongly and contend at the highest level once again.
