The NFL community is mourning the loss of former offensive lineman Tre’ Johnson, a respected player who earned Pro Bowl honors during his career. He passed away at the age of 54 on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

His wife, Irene, shared the heartbreaking news through a social media post. “It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre’ Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday February 15, 2026, during a brief family trip. His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock.”

Born Edward Stanton Johnson III in New York City, he developed into a standout talent at the collegiate level. Johnson attended Temple University, where he competed from 1989 to 1993.

During his time with the Owls, he received three All-Big East honors and was recognized as a third-team All-American in his final season. He also reached the finals for the Lombardi Award and participated in the Senior Bowl that year.

These accomplishments positioned him as a prime prospect entering the professional ranks. The Washington Redskins, as the franchise was known at the time, selected him with the 31st overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. Johnson quickly established himself as a reliable presence on the offensive line.

He remained with Washington for the majority of his tenure, staying through the 2000 season. His standout year came in 1999, when he earned a spot in the Pro Bowl and was named to the second-team All-Pro list, highlighting his skill and impact as a guard.

A brief stint saw him play just four games for Washington in 2000 before he moved on. In 2001, he joined the Cleveland Browns, appearing in three contests. He then returned to Washington for one final campaign in 2002, wrapping up a nine-season NFL journey.

The current Washington Commanders organization expressed their sorrow in an official statement.

“We’re heartbroken to learn of the loss of former Washington All-Pro guard Tre’ Johnson,” the team said. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

Temple University also paid tribute to their former star.

“Temple University is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of former Owl football star Tre Johnson,” the school noted in its release.

Following his retirement from professional football, Johnson transitioned into education. He took on the role of a history teacher at the Landon School, located in Bethesda, Maryland, where he continued to influence young lives long after hanging up his cleats.

The unexpected nature of his departure has left many in disbelief, especially given the sudden circumstances during what was meant to be a relaxing family getaway. Tributes have poured in from across the sports world, reflecting on his contributions both on the field and in the classroom.

Our deepest condolences go out to Irene, their children Chloe, EJ, EZ, and Eden, along with all of Johnson’s extended family, close friends, former teammates, and everyone touched by his life. May he rest in peace.
