The Miami Hurricanes have secured their place in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game after a dramatic 31-27 victory over the Ole Miss Rebels in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal. This hard-fought win marks a significant milestone for the program, representing their first appearance in the title game in over two decades.

The contest at State Farm Stadium unfolded as a back-and-forth battle, with Ole Miss seemingly poised to pull off the upset at several points. The Rebels built momentum and took leads multiple times, particularly in the fourth quarter. Despite Miami’s defensive strength displayed in earlier playoff rounds, Ole Miss pushed the Hurricanes to the brink.

In the closing moments, Miami quarterback Carson Beck delivered the decisive play. Trailing late in the game, Beck scrambled and rushed for the game-winning touchdown with just 18 seconds remaining, capping a thrilling comeback drive. This moment not only sealed the victory but also highlighted Beck’s growth in high-pressure situations since transferring to Miami.

Beck, who joined the Hurricanes from Georgia ahead of the 2025 season, has been instrumental in their postseason run. His performance in the Fiesta Bowl included efficient passing, timely decisions, and the unexpected mobility that produced the clinching score. Many observers have noted how he has regained the form that once made him a highly regarded prospect.

Following the game, college football icon Urban Meyer shared his thoughts on Miami’s outlook heading into the championship. Appearing on “The Colin Cowherd Show,” Meyer described the Hurricanes as a formidable challenge for any opponent.

“What I mean by a problem is a problem for the other teams. What’s really fun to watch as a former coach, it’s almost the physical teams are separating themselves right now,” Meyer said.

He went on to emphasize a shift in the sport, stating, “The pass-happy, the other type of offense, the other type of teams are starting to disappear,” he told Cowherd, adding, “teams that control the line of scrimmage, play great defense, and are tough as hell, they’re the ones that are winning games.”

Meyer specifically highlighted Miami’s offensive line as a key strength. He praised their ability to sustain plays, noting how the unit enabled running gains of “eight to 10 yards post-contact” during the Fiesta Bowl triumph.

The former coach also commended Beck’s development under Miami’s system.

“Here’s the problem for the opponents. It’s hard to score on Miami, and now Carson Beck is playing like that Carson Beck that everybody talked about for the last four years. He has all the talent. Now he’s taking care of the ball. He’s making some great throws,” Meyer said.

Miami’s physical style of play, anchored by strong trench dominance and a stout defense, has become a defining trait. Under head coach Mario Cristobal, the Hurricanes have embodied the kind of resilient, ground-oriented football that Meyer believes is thriving in the current landscape.

The national championship matchup is now set for January 19, 2026, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida—giving the Hurricanes the unique advantage of playing on their home field. They will face the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers, who advanced with a commanding 56-22 victory over Oregon in the Peach Bowl semifinal.

Although Miami enters as the underdog against Indiana’s high-powered attack led by Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, Meyer’s analysis suggests the Hurricanes possess the toughness and physicality to pose a serious threat. Their ability to control the line of scrimmage and limit explosive offenses could prove pivotal in the title game.

This run has revitalized excitement around Miami football, echoing the program’s storied past while showcasing a modern blend of grit and talent. With the championship on the line, the Hurricanes have positioned themselves as a team that refuses to back down.
