The Pittsburgh Steelers head into their regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens on January 4, 2026, with massive implications on the line, including the potential end of the Mike Tomlin era.

A defeat would not only hand the AFC North title to Baltimore but also eliminate Pittsburgh from postseason contention, marking another year without a playoff victory under the longtime coach.

While an outright dismissal appears unlikely given the organization’s history of stability, insiders suggest the franchise has quietly explored contingencies should Tomlin opt for a change.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer highlighted growing chatter around several veteran coaches, emphasizing that any shifts would likely stem from personal decisions rather than terminations.

“The Steelers, Ravens and Bills have generated conversation in recent weeks. Is there any reality to it? I don’t think these would be firings,” Breer wrote. “But there is some thought that Mike Tomlin could look at a reset, with the Pittsburgh roster potentially going through one soon too, and take a year or two in TV before returning to the sideline. And interestingly enough, Shula’s name has been connected to the Steelers, in case there is an opening.”

Breer’s comments point to Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula emerging as a linked candidate, reflecting preparatory work in case of a vacancy.

Separately, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini disclosed that Pittsburgh has engaged in preliminary interest regarding Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman as a hypothetical successor.

“Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman seriously considered making the jump to the NFL, with multiple teams reaching out to gauge his interest, according to league sources,” Russini said.

“Though Freeman ultimately announced he’s staying at Notre Dame, there’s a strong belief around the league that this won’t be the last time his name is connected to NFL opportunities. The Giants, Titans and Browns all had internal discussions about Freeman, as did the Pittsburgh Steelers (in the event longtime coach Mike Tomlin decided to step away).”

Freeman recently recommitted to the Fighting Irish with an upgraded deal, removing him from immediate consideration but underscoring the broader interest in fresh voices.

The matchup, set for an 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff at Acrisure Stadium, carries extra weight amid Tomlin’s extended playoff drought and questions about roster direction.

Tomlin has delivered consistent regular-season success, including a streak of non-losing campaigns, yet the lack of recent postseason triumphs has fueled external debate.

A victory would secure division honors and a home playoff spot, potentially quieting much of the noise surrounding his tenure.

Conversely, a loss could intensify discussions about a mutual reset, allowing both sides to pursue new paths without acrimony.

As the Steelers prepare for this winner-take-all rivalry showdown, the outcome may influence not just the 2025 playoffs but the trajectory of leadership entering 2026 and beyond.
