In the world of college football, few understand the demands of quarterbacking better than a former standout at the position. That’s what made ESPN analyst and 2007 Heisman winner Tim Tebow’s assessment so compelling following the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Tebow was clearly captivated by a standout effort that helped propel Ole Miss forward.

The former Florida star focused particular attention on the concluding matchup of the quarterfinal stage, highlighting one of the most unexpected breakout talents of the 2025 campaign. Just one year earlier, this dynamic signal-caller was playing for Division II’s Ferris State Bulldogs.

In a stunning turnaround, he orchestrated an upset over the powerhouse Georgia Bulldogs, and Tebow made no effort to hide his admiration.

Following Trinidad Chambliss’s guidance of Ole Miss to a thrilling 39-34 victory against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, Tebow spotlighted the quarterback’s excellence during on-field interviews.

“I feel like it was one of the best quarterback performances that we have seen since the College Football Playoff has been in existence,” Tebow told Chambliss. Tebow praised Chambliss’s “crazy scrambles” with helping set up the Rebel victory.

Chambliss surpassed a longstanding Sugar Bowl mark for consecutive completions that Tebow himself had set years ago, achieving 13 in a row.

He wrapped up the contest going 30-of-46 through the air for 362 yards and two scoring throws. Despite Ole Miss converting only 5 of 14 third-down attempts, Chambliss repeatedly engineered clutch conversions through remarkable individual efforts.

The most pivotal moment arrived late in the fourth quarter: a 40-yard completion to wideout De’Zhaun Stribling on third-and-5 from the Rebels’ own 30-yard line, with just 32 seconds remaining and the score knotted at 34. A failure there likely would have handed possession back to Georgia, potentially forcing overtime at best.

Instead, offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. placed full confidence in Chambliss, who launched a deep one-on-one pass to Stribling. The receiver hauled it in near the Georgia 45-yard line before racing further downfield to the 30, positioning kicker Lucas Caminero (likely a variation of the actual name) for the decisive field goal moments later.

Chambliss’s ascent to prominence stands as one of the 2025 season’s most improbable narratives. He opened the year as the understudy to highly regarded returning starter Austin Simmons on Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss roster. When Simmons suffered an ankle issue in the second week against Kentucky, Chambliss transitioned from a reserve once lauded by Kiffin into the centerpiece of the Rebels’ offensive success.

In his initial three outings as starter, Chambliss eclipsed 300 passing yards each time. Across the full regular season and playoffs to that point, he accumulated 3,660 yards and 21 touchdowns via the air, with a mere three picks.

Merely two seasons prior, he served as a reserve at Division II Ferris State. In 2024, however, he threw for 2,925 yards and 26 touchdowns while leading the Bulldogs to a national title, catching the eye of Kiffin and earning a portal opportunity.

With the 2025 season concluded for many, speculation surrounds Chambliss’s next steps. Questions linger about a potential NCAA waiver for an additional year of eligibility, and if granted, whether he would remain in Oxford—especially given Kiffin’s move to LSU—or explore other options.

Yet on that dramatic New Year’s night in New Orleans, a revered former quarterback anointed Chambliss’s effort as among the finest ever witnessed in playoff history, cementing a legacy that blends grit, talent, and sheer willpower in one unforgettable performance.
