The New York Yankees face significant uncertainty in their starting pitching staff heading into the upcoming season. Key arms like Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt are recovering from serious injuries, creating gaps that could impact the team’s performance early on.

Cole, the team’s ace, underwent Tommy John surgery and missed substantial time, while Schmidt dealt with elbow issues requiring procedures that delay his return. These setbacks have left the rotation with notable vulnerabilities.

In response, the Yankees have surfaced in discussions involving potential acquisitions of established starters. Names such as Sandy Alcántara from the Marlins, Freddy Peralta of the Brewers, and Hunter Greene from the Reds have been mentioned in trade speculation.

While Greene appears particularly difficult to pry away from Cincinnati, deals for Peralta or Alcántara remain plausible options depending on negotiations.

Amid these trade talks, attention has turned to the international market. SportsGrid analyst Paul Connor has forecasted that the Yankees will secure a contract with standout Japanese pitcher Tatsuya Imai during this offseason.

Former executive Jim Bowden, writing for The Athletic, has estimated that Imai could command a deal worth $154 million.

“Dominant NPB starter with a 1.92 ERA, 10-5 record, and 178 K in 163.2 IP during 2025 breakout; 27.8% strikeout rate well above league average, plus a combined no-hitter; frontline upside, but MLB adjustment and past control issues pose risks,” Connor wrote.

Reports indicate the Yankees have shown sustained interest in Imai over recent weeks. His profile aligns well with the needs in New York, particularly given his expressed motivation to challenge the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bringing in Imai would provide valuable depth and stability to the pitching group as Cole and Schmidt progress through rehabilitation.

Although Cole’s comeback is anticipated relatively soon, questions linger about whether he will regain his previous dominance post-injury. Imai’s addition could ease pressure on the staff if full recovery proves challenging for the veteran.
