LSU Could Be Left With Difficult Choice if Lane Kiffin Backs Away

The LSU Tigers have seemingly placed their full faith in Lane Kiffin, aggressively pursuing the Ole Miss head coach in hopes of bringing him back to the Bayou. Sources close to the search indicate the Tigers are prepared to make Kiffin one of the highest-paid coaches in college football, but there remains real uncertainty about whether he ultimately chooses LSU, stays with the Rebels, or accepts a massive offer from Florida.

The Gators, Tigers, and Rebels are the three programs entangled in what has become the defining storyline of this year’s coaching cycle, with each school willing to open the checkbook for the 49-year-old play-caller.

Once viewed as a risky hire after his short and turbulent tenure at USC, Kiffin has steadily rebuilt his résumé. He took over a struggling Florida Atlantic program in 2017 and led the Owls to back-to-back bowl wins and a Conference USA title.

Since arriving in Oxford in 2020, he has transformed Ole Miss from a perennial also-ran in the SEC West into a legitimate contender. The Rebels are currently in position to earn their first-ever berth in the College Football Playoff.

LSU’s sudden divorce from Brian Kelly—despite the millions still owed on his contract—has only intensified the Tigers’ courtship of Kiffin. Athletic director Scott Woodward and the LSU administration are said to view Kiffin as the long-term solution they desperately need after the Kelly era ended far earlier than anyone in Baton Rouge anticipated. Insiders say the pursuit has been so single-minded that virtually all other candidates have been pushed to the side.

As The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reported, the absence of any clear Plan B has raised eyebrows across the industry.

“Figuring out to whom LSU would turn if it’s not Kiffin has been difficult to pin down. Few to no names have been mentioned, depending on who you talk to,” Vannini wrote.

“Does that mean LSU is the more likely landing spot for Kiffin, or is LSU just more confident and/or secretive with a big and unexpected swing as a backup option? We’ll find out Friday or Saturday.”

Until Kiffin makes his choice—expected by the end of this week—the entire coaching market remains in limbo. Multiple high-profile openings are effectively on hold, with athletic directors and search firms waiting to see where the first domino lands.

Once Kiffin picks his destination, whether it’s Baton Rouge, Gainesville, or sticking in Oxford, the rest of the carousel should spin rapidly into motion. For now, LSU’s future—and much of the SEC’s immediate coaching landscape—rests squarely on one decision.
