When the No. 7 Oregon Ducks take the field at Autzen Stadium on Saturday afternoon, far more than Pacific Northwest bragging rights will be at stake. The visiting No. 15 USC Trojans are staring at a near-certain end to their College Football Playoff dreams with a loss, while even one slip-up for Oregon could jeopardize the Ducks’ inside track to the 12-team field.

The stakes couldn’t be higher, but third-year head coach Dan Lanning appears as settled and focused as ever.

Appearing on ESPN’s College GameDay ahead of the marquee Big Ten clash, Lanning put an emphatic end to the perennial NFL rumors and college football rumor mill talks that have followed him since arriving in Eugene.

“I love this place,” Lanning told the national audience. “You gotta be able to appreciate what you have. I appreciate what I have here so much. This will be my spot. This is where I’m at forever.”

At just 39, Lanning has already built a résumé that reads like a fast-track to a bronze bust. He cut his teeth on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff, then served as Kirby Smart’s defensive coordinator during Georgia’s recent dominance before Oregon came calling in December 2021.

The marriage has been nothing short of electric. In their inaugural Big Ten campaign last season, the Ducks stormed through the regular season unbeaten, toppled Penn State in the conference title game, and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the expanded playoff.

This year, Oregon has blended breakneck tempo with the kind of trench warfare typically associated with the Big Ten’s old guard—a versatility on full display during a gritty road win over Iowa earlier this fall.

Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. EST kickoff on CBS pits the Ducks as 10.5-point favorites (per FanDuel Sportsbook) against a desperate USC squad fighting for its postseason life. A victory would keep Oregon firmly in the driver’s seat for another Big Ten Championship Game appearance and likely a top-four seed.

After hosting the Trojans, the Ducks close the regular season with their heated rivalry against Washington next week, while USC finishes with its annual Battle for the Victory Bell against UCLA.

For Dan Lanning and the program he’s emphatically committed his future to, the message is clear: the best chapters in Eugene are still being written.
