Lane Kiffin and the No. 8 Ole Miss Rebels continued their strong 2025 season with a hard-fought 34-26 road victory over the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon, improving their record to an impressive 7-1.
The win, however, was more than just another mark in the victory column—it triggered a significant milestone in Kiffin’s tenure with the Rebels.
Amid a whirlwind of rumors linking him to the head coaching vacancy at Florida, Kiffin received major contract news following the win in Norman. Per the terms of his current agreement with the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation, Kiffin’s seventh win of the season automatically activated a one-year contract extension worth $9 million, with $7.2 million guaranteed, as reported by USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz.
Additionally, Kiffin has already earned $150,000 in performance bonuses this season, underscoring the success of his program. The victory comes as Kiffin navigates persistent speculation about his future, with his name frequently mentioned as a top candidate to replace Billy Napier as head coach of the Florida Gators.
Addressing the rumors head-on, Kiffin took a proactive approach with his team earlier this week.
ESPN’s Molly McGrath, via On3 Sports, shared insight into his decision: “Lane Kiffin told me he usually doesn’t address those kind of coaching rumors in-season, because there’s so much more football to play, and there’s so many bigger things to focus on. But he’s actually going to do things differently today in their team meeting – he is going to address those (Florida) rumors with his players.”
Kiffin’s message to his team was clear and positive: “He’s going to talk to them about it and say: ‘Hey, this is what happens when you win. This is a compliment to our players, our staff and our entire program.’ He wants to talk to his players about it because there’s so many new guys on their team this year that haven’t dealt with it before.”
The approach reflects Kiffin’s commitment to transparency and maintaining focus amid distractions, particularly for a roster with many newcomers unaccustomed to such speculation.
Despite the off-field noise, Kiffin’s focus remains on the Rebels’ 2025 campaign, which has been stellar aside from a single loss. That setback came last weekend against Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs, where Ole Miss fell narrowly, 43-35, in a high-scoring battle at Sanford Stadium in Athens.
Looking ahead, the Rebels return home to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford next Saturday to face the unranked South Carolina Gamecocks in an SEC showdown. With Kiffin’s contract extension secured and his team performing at a high level, Ole Miss is poised to continue its push for a standout season, even as the coaching rumor mill churns on.
