Boston Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet delivered a masterful performance on Wednesday in his second start of the season.

After a solid Opening Day outing where he struck out four over 5.0 innings while allowing two runs, the left-hander elevated his game to new heights. Crochet tossed 8.0 scoreless innings, racking up eight strikeouts in a dominant display that underscored his value to the Red Sox rotation.

The gem came on the heels of a significant milestone for the 25-year-old pitcher: his first start since signing a six-year, $170 million contract extension that secures his place in Boston through the 2031 season.

His new contract marks a turning point for the one-time All-Star, who reflected on the newfound stability it brings to his career.

“Going back to when the trade went through, we knew Boston was a place where we would love to be long term,” Crochet said. “Credit to the front office for staying diligent, and my agency as well. I can’t think of the last time I played baseball for pride. In college, you’re playing to get drafted, and once you’re in the big leagues, you’re playing to stay in the big leagues. So to have this security and feel like I’m playing to truly just win ballgames, it takes a lot of the riff-raff out of it.”

Crochet’s journey to this moment has been one of evolution. After making his major league debut in 2020 as a reliever, he transitioned to the starting rotation last season with the Chicago White Sox. In 32 starts, he posted a 6-12 record with a 3.58 ERA, striking out an impressive 209 batters in 146.0 innings pitched.

His performance caught the attention of the Red Sox, who acquired him in the offseason in a blockbuster trade that sent prospects Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth, and Wikelman González to Chicago.

Now settled in Boston, Crochet appears poised to anchor the Red Sox pitching staff for years to come. Wednesday’s outing was a testament to his growth as a starter and his ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment.

With his extension in hand and a clear focus on winning, the southpaw is embracing the opportunity to play for pride—and for a team with postseason aspirations.

As the 2025 season unfolds, Crochet’s blend of talent and tenacity could prove to be a cornerstone for Boston’s pursuit of another World Series. So far, things are off to a great start for him with the Boston Red Sox.
