The Dallas Mavericks are hopeful that star forward Anthony Davis could return to action soon following a prolonged absence due to an adductor strain. Davis has been sidelined since sustaining the injury during his debut for the Mavericks on February 8.

Davis is listed as doubtful for Monday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets but may return in Tuesday’s game against the New York Knicks.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Davis is “in increasingly strong contention” to play at some point during the Mavericks’ upcoming road stretch. After the games against the Nets and Knicks, Dallas will continue on the road with matchups against the Orlando Magic and Chicago Bulls.

Davis’s debut for the Mavericks was memorable; he recorded 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks against the Houston Rockets. However, his promising start was cut short by the injury that has kept him out for over a month.

Recently, Davis was assigned to the Texas Legends in the G League to continue his rehabilitation. This occurred multiple times, allowing Davis to participate in 5-on-5 action.

The Mavericks have struggled in Davis’s absence, particularly after losing star point guard Kyrie Irving to a season-ending ACL injury earlier this month. With other key players like Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford also facing injuries, Dallas has seen its playoff hopes dwindle, falling to 11th place in the Western Conference with a 34-37 record.

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon has reported that there were discussions about potentially shutting Davis down for the remainder of the season, considering the Mavericks’ slim playoff chances and Irving’s absence. However, Davis has steadfastly determined to return to the court this season.

While the Mavericks are not currently seen as strong championship contenders, Davis’s return could boost the team’s morale and performance as they attempt to make a late-season push for the playoffs. His presence on the court could help stabilize the team during a challenging part of their schedule.
