Last offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles signed running back Saquon Barkley away from the New York Giants, and the Giants watched as Barkley helped lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl title.
Now, one of New York’s top pass rushers is departing for Philadelphia.
The Eagles have signed former Giants edge rusher Azeez Ojulari to a one-year, $4 million contract, landing arguably the biggest bargain on the free-agent market, via ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Ojulari played in 11 games this past season, registering 28 tackles and six sacks.
The 24-year-old was selected by New York in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft and had a very impressive rookie campaign with Big Blue, racking up 49 tackles and eight sacks.
Since then, however, Ojulari has struggled to stay on the field, appearing in a combined 29 contests over the last three seasons. When healthy, the Georgia Bulldogs product has been very effective, but whether or not he can actually consistently play in games remains to be seen.
The Eagles lost a couple of key pass rushers earlier in free agency, as edge rusher Josh Sweat and defensive tackle Milton Williams both left for massive deals.
Ojulari isn’t quite the name that Sweat is, but honestly, when he is right, there is a chance he can be nearly as productive. Sweat had a great showing in the Super Bowl, but for the most part, he has merely been a good but not great player in Philadelphia. He recorded 41 tackles and eight sacks in 2024 and posted just one double-digit sack campaign throughout his seven-year stay in Philly.
The Eagles are very tight against the salary cap, so the fact that they were able to land an impact player like Ojulari so deep into free agency speaks volumes of how well run the organization truly is.
Perhaps Ojulari was willing to take less money to play for a contender, or maybe there really just wasn’t a whole lot of interest in the Marietta, Ga. native.
Whatever the case may be, Philadelphia just landed itself a very talented player, and once again, it came at the expense of the Giants.
