Former Dodgers All-Star Reveals Why He Didn’t Join Yankees

The New York Yankees have lost Giancarlo Stanton for what appears to be an extended period of time, as the slugger is dealing with significant injuries to both elbows and is sidelined indefinitely.

As a result, the Yankees will need to find a replacement at designated hitter, and while Dominic Smith appears to be emerging as a potential frontrunner for the job, New York fans definitely would have preferred a more established option.

The Yanks could have had that in Justin Turner, who made a couple of All-Star appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers and signed with the Chicago Cubs earlier this offseason.

So, why didn’t the Yankees make a push for Turner? Well, it may have had something to do with their facial hair policy, which they recently amended to permit “well groomed” beards.

Turner told Jon Heyman of The New York Post that the Bronx Bombers were not even in consideration for him because of their policy, which previously did not allow facial hair (outside of mustaches) at all. Turner even added that he would “need a definition” of what “well groomed” means.

The 40-year-old certainly showed serious signs of decline last season, slashing .259/.354/.383 over 539 plate appearances between the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners. However, he is also two years removed from posting an .800 OPS with the Boston Red Sox.

At the very least, the Yankees could have certainly used Turner’s reliability on their roster, but apparently, the Cal State Fullerton product—who, ironically enough, was originally drafted by the Yanks back in 2005—evidently had no interest in joining the beard-adverse franchise.
