Steelers Connected to Risky Weapon in NFL Free Agency

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have swung a blockbuster trade to acquire wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, but they still have plenty of offensive holes that must be addressed.

We obviously know that the Steelers need to get their quarterback situation resolved, but they also need to find a solution in the backfield after losing running back Najee Harris.

It seems hard to imagine that Pittsburgh plans on rolling with Jaylen Warren as the clear-cut featured back, so the Steelers will probably add another piece at the position.

DJ Dunson of FanSided has come up with a potential answer for Pittsburgh, naming halfback J.K. Dobbins as someone it should pursue in free agency.

“Dobbins had his best season as a starter in the Greg Roman-Jim Harbaugh scheme,” Dunson wrote. “He was briefly placed on injured reserve, which is the only reason he did not produce his first 1,000-yard NFL season. Besides, they just lost Najee Harris to the Chargers, so an informal exchange seems apropos.”

The problem is that Dobbins is wildly injury-prone, which Dunson notes later on in his assessment. He even missed some time this past year due to a knee injury.

When healthy, the 26-year-old is a good player, as evidenced by the fact that he rushed for 905 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 4.6 yards per carry with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024.

However, Dobbins has never played a full season since entering the NFL in 2020, and between 2021 and 2023, he appeared in a grand total of nine contests.

The Steelers may be better off waiting until the NFL Draft and plucking a player from what is slated to be a very deep running back class.
