Miami Dolphins Ripped for Head-Scratching Free Agent Move

The Miami Dolphins released running back Raheem Mostert last month, which didn’t come as much of a surprise given how unproductive he was in 2024.

However, the Dolphins didn’t exactly replace him with a major upgrade, signing former Las Vegas Raiders halfback Alexander Mattison.

There was a time when Mattison was a decent, efficient backup during his early Minnesota Vikings days, but he has slipped in recent years, and this past season, he had his worst campaign yet, finishing with 420 yards and four touchdowns while averaging a paltry 3.2 yards per carry.

Not shockingly, Miami has being taken to task for the move, as Brian Miller of Phin Phanatic doesn’t quite understand the team’s thought process.

“Mattison has always shown a bit of promise but he has managed to frustrate fantasy football owners who can’t get a grasp on his inconsistency,” Miller wrote. “He is not a legit short-yardage threat either, something the Dolphins actually need.”

Miami ranked 21st in rushing offense this past season, as the dynamic duo of Mostert and De’Von Achane was not quite the same this time around. In 2023, the Dolphins’ ground attack ranked sixth.

Perhaps Miami is planning on selecting a running back in the NFL Draft, as this upcoming class is teeming with talent at the position. The Dolphins could then use Mattison as a tertiary option in that case.

Otherwise, it is fair to wonder what Miami is actually doing, considering that Mattison has not logged four yards per carry since 2020.
