Nurkic Lashes Out: ‘We Don’t Have a Relationship’ With Suns Coach Budenholzer, Frustration Mounts Over Role

Jusuf Nurkic, the Phoenix Suns center, expressed frustration with his current role under head coach Mike Budenholzer, revealing that the two “don’t have a relationship” amid his benching. The 29-year-old, who has not played since Jan. 7, voiced his discontent after being replaced in the starting lineup by Mason Plumlee on Jan. 6.

Nurkic, who had started 23 games this season, made it clear that the decision blindsided him.

“It’s hard to understand why,” he said about being moved to the bench. “I try to do whatever they want from me. I play my role or whatever, but at the end of the day, it’s the NBA.”

The Bosnian big man, who is averaging 8.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game this season, added that he had not received any prior communication from Budenholzer about the move and that the lack of discussion had only deepened the rift.

“We don’t have a relationship,” Nurkic said, according to the Arizona Republic. “So, it’s fine. For me, just be a pro and do the best I can. Work and stay ready for whatever might be, but there is no chaos or bringing that to this team.”

Despite his frustration, Nurkic attempted to remain professional, stating that he had no issue with the other centers on the Suns’ roster.

“I’m glad Bud found somebody who he can play,” Nurkic said, referencing the emergence of Nick Richards, who had started the last three games in his place. Richards had a breakout performance in Saturday’s 119-109 win over the Washington Wizards, tallying 20 points and 19 rebounds.

Budenholzer addressed Nurkic’s comments after the game, acknowledging the frustration but standing by his decision.

“It’s never easy in this league,” Budenholzer said. “He hasn’t played. I’m sure he’s frustrated, so I respect that. We got three or four guys who play the same position, and we’re gonna go with who gives us our best chance.”

The Suns, who acquired Nurkic in a three-team trade before the 2023-24 season, have been experimenting with their center rotation, and it seems as if the coaching staff has moved on from Nurkic as a starter. Nurkic, for his part, believes he will remain with the team past the Feb. 6 trade deadline but also said he will be prepared if the Suns decide to move him.

“One door closes, another will open eventually,” he said.

Despite the tumultuous relationship with Budenholzer, Nurkic’s confidence in his ability to contribute remains intact. As the trade deadline looms, it’s clear that the Suns’ handling of the center position will continue to be a point of contention, both within the locker room and among fans.
