As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for their quest for a third straight Super Bowl, tight end Travis Kelce keeps his NFL future uncertain—at least for now.
Appearing on The Stephen A. Smith Show, Kelce stated that he plans to reevaluate his career after the postseason, though he acknowledged that he will “probably tell myself how much I love playing” and be back for the 2025 season.
Despite the looming question about his future, the 34-year-old is focused on helping the Chiefs in their playoff push, beginning this weekend with the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium.
Kelce has previously opened up about the challenges of deciding when to retire. In a September appearance on the New Heights podcast, Kelce spoke about the difficulty of knowing when to call it quits. “It’s going to be hard trying to figure out when to call it quits or not,” he said, emphasizing his love for the game.
Though Kelce has shown some signs of physical decline in recent years, he remains a crucial piece of the Chiefs’ offense. His two worst seasons in terms of yards per reception have come in the last two years, with a career-low 8.5 yards per catch in 2024. His 823 receiving yards this season were his fewest since his rookie year in 2013 when he played just one game due to a knee injury.
However, despite not being as explosive as he was in his prime, Kelce remains a vital pass-catching threat. He has led the Chiefs in targets, receptions, and receiving yards for the past three seasons and remains arguably the team’s most reliable weapon in the passing game.
Whenever Kelce does decide to retire, his place in NFL history is already secure. He is one of only three tight ends in league history to accumulate at least 1,000 receptions and 12,000 yards, and he will indeed be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame five years after he hangs up his cleats.
Travis Kelce’s focus remains on the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff journey. With the team having reached the AFC Championship Game every year since 2019, the team is again positioned for a deep postseason run, hoping to capture a third consecutive Super Bowl title.
