For decades, the Los Angeles Chargers have showcased exceptional quarterback talent with stars like Dan Fouts and Philip Rivers leading the way. Despite their successes, the franchise has yet to achieve its ultimate goal: winning a Super Bowl.

Now, Justin Herbert has emerged as the team’s new leader under center, but his journey is beginning to mirror those who came before him.

Although the Chargers brought in Jim Harbaugh to replace Brandon Staley as head coach, providing a much-needed sense of stability, the team continues to face familiar obstacles. These recurring challenges were evident during their Wild Card Round loss to the Houston Texans.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III recently weighed in on this topic during an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” drawing a direct parallel between Herbert and Philip Rivers.

“Justin Herbert is Philip Rivers. That’s what he is right now,” Griffin said, comparing the current Los Angeles Chargers quarterback to the former franchise legend.

Griffin went on to explain that Herbert’s career trajectory could closely resemble Rivers’ unless significant changes occur.

Rivers was renowned for his consistency and ability to put up impressive numbers, but his playoff record never reached the heights of legends like Peyton Manning.

Herbert’s early years in the league have been marked by instability. With three head coaches and four offensive coordinators during his tenure, many analysts point to these changes as a major reason for the team’s inability to make a deep playoff run.

“Herbert is now in that realm where he’s going to make a decision, is he going to be Philip Rivers, or is he going to be able to turn the corner and be a Peyton Manning type?” Griffin posed during his statement.

Griffin also emphasized the importance of Herbert taking responsibility for his performances in high-pressure situations, regardless of the challenges around him.

While acknowledging Herbert’s immense talent, Griffin highlighted the need for accountability, pointing out that other quarterbacks, such as Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott, are often held to similar standards.

Ultimately, the discussion underscores a critical moment in Herbert’s career.

Whether he continues down a path similar to Rivers or breaks through to achieve greater success will depend on his ability to rise above the challenges that have long plagued the Los Angeles Chargers.
