As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for a pivotal offseason, attention will focus on major priorities such as a new contract for Micah Parsons and decisions regarding head coach Mike McCarthy’s future. However, a lesser-discussed but significant issue is the potential departure of long-time defensive lineman DeMarcus Lawrence.
Lawrence, a cornerstone of the Cowboys’ defense for 11 seasons, is set to hit free agency after the final year of a three-year, $40 million contract signed in 2022. Despite missing most of 2024 with a foot injury, the 32-year-old delivered an outstanding 2023 campaign.
Over his career, Lawrence has accumulated 61.5 sacks in 141 games and made four Pro Bowl appearances. However, as he approaches his 33rd birthday in April, the Cowboys appear intent on getting younger across their roster, raising questions about Lawrence’s future in Dallas.
A Potential Reunion with Dan Quinn?
According to PFF’s Bradley Locker, Lawrence could be a target for the Washington Commanders, where former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn now serves as head coach. Locker highlighted the Commanders’ need for defensive upgrades, particularly along the front line, and suggested Lawrence would be an ideal fit to bolster their pass rush and run defense.
“Reuniting with Dan Quinn to beef up the Commanders’ pass rush and run defense would be a perfect fit,” Locker wrote.
The prospect of Lawrence joining an NFC East rival, particularly the Commanders, is far from ideal for Cowboys fans. It’s a move that would strengthen a divisional opponent while leaving a void on Dallas’ defensive front.
Dallas Cowboys’ Defensive Future
While Lawrence’s departure would signal the end of an era, the Cowboys’ emphasis on youth across the roster might make his exit inevitable. The team could look to younger options to fill the gap, especially with Micah Parsons emerging as the defensive centerpiece.
Still, losing Lawrence to Washington—or any NFC East rival—would add an unwelcome layer of sting for Dallas. Whether the Cowboys can find a way to retain the veteran lineman remains uncertain. Still, they must decide if they will prioritize his experience and production over their desire to get younger on defense.
Outlook
As Lawrence’s free agency approaches, the Cowboys must weigh his contributions over the past decade against their plans. Meanwhile, teams like the Commanders will be eager to capitalize on the opportunity to add one of the league’s most well-rounded pass-rushers.
The hope for Dallas is that if Lawrence leaves, he lands anywhere but Washington—or Philadelphia.
