The Milwaukee Brewers may face a significant challenge this offseason as their star shortstop, Willy Adames, enters free agency. With Adames potentially seeking a new team, the Brewers’ front office is preparing for the possibility of needing a new anchor for their infield.
According to recent reports, one possible solution could come from the Houston Astros in the form of two-time World Series champion Alex Bregman.
Adames has been a critical component of Milwaukee’s lineup, both offensively and defensively. However, if he departs, the Brewers will be forced to fill the void quickly.
Bregman, a standout third baseman for the Astros, has emerged as a possible target. As Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston mentioned, Milwaukee could be in the running for the All-Star, but they would likely face stiff competition from other teams.
“Toronto (Blue Jays) and Milwaukee can also benefit from having a player the caliber of (Alex) Bregman at third, which means the former world champ will likely have a market brimming with potential suitors,” Beaston stated in a recent report.
Bregman’s offensive production in the 2023 season is once again solid, with a .256 batting average, 46 extra-base hits, including 26 home runs, 74 RBIs, and an OPS of .760 (115 OPS+) over 144 games.
His ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball could be exactly what the Brewers need to maintain their competitive edge in a tight National League Central division.
While Bregman’s primary position is third base, the Brewers could get creative with their infield alignment. Should they acquire him, the team could shift Joey Ortiz to shortstop, a position he’s familiar with, while allowing Bregman to continue manning the hot corner.
Alternatively, with Bregman’s previous experience at shortstop, Milwaukee could slide him over to cover the gap left by Adames and keep Ortiz at third base, solving the infield puzzle in multiple ways.
The most significant obstacle to bringing Bregman to Milwaukee, however, may not be his talent but his salary. Bregman is expected to command a substantial contract, with Spotrac predicting his annual salary to be around $30 million per year. The Brewers, known for their conservative financial approach, might hesitate to commit such a large sum to a single player, especially given their payroll constraints in recent years.
Bregman is finishing a five-year, $100 million contract extension with the Astros, making him one of the more high-priced options on the market.
For the Brewers, acquiring a player of Bregman’s caliber would send a clear signal that they’re committed to contending in the near future. But it will come down to how much the team is willing to invest in a premium player during a crucial offseason.
With Adames potentially walking and Bregman’s future still up in the air, it promises to be an intriguing offseason for Milwaukee.
Will the Brewers make the bold move to sign a proven World Series champion, or will they take a more conservative route? The next few months will reveal their ambitions and willingness to spend.
