San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell is expected to miss the start of the 2024-25 NBA season as he continues his recovery from a foot injury.

The Spurs provided an update on Friday, stating that Vassell has resumed non-contact basketball activities, but he will not be available for the team’s season opener.

His status will be reevaluated on November 1.

Vassell, one of the Spurs’ key players, played in 68 games last season before a stress reaction in the third metatarsal of his right foot sidelined him for the final eight games. Following the diagnosis, he underwent surgery to address the issue and has been diligently working through his rehabilitation process ever since.

The Spurs remain optimistic about his eventual return to full health, but his absence will undoubtedly be felt as the team enters a crucial season.

Vassell’s shooting, defensive prowess, and overall versatility were significant factors in the Spurs’ performance last year. His ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and contribute on both ends of the court made him an essential part of San Antonio’s game plan.

Without Vassell on the floor, the Spurs may face early challenges in establishing their rhythm. The team, which has been developing its young core over the past few seasons, will need to rely more heavily on other contributors to fill the void left by Vassell’s absence.

His return timeline will be a critical storyline as the Spurs navigate the early portion of the season.

San Antonio is hopeful that once reassessed on November 1, Vassell will be cleared for full participation, providing a much-needed boost as the team looks to compete in a tough Western Conference.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting his return, as the guard’s continued development is seen as a key piece in the Spurs’ rebuilding efforts.

For now, the focus remains on his recovery, as the team monitors his progress closely to ensure he comes back healthy and ready to contribute at a high level.
