Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce has had a slow start to the 2024 NFL season, with just four catches for 39 yards through the first two games.

On his podcast, New Heights, co-hosted with his brother Jason Kelce, the Chiefs’ standout took full responsibility, saying, “I put that on me.” Kelce expressed his frustration with his performance, noting that it hasn’t been up to his usual standard.

Kelce’s drop in productivity is unusual for the eight-time Pro Bowler, who has become one of the most prolific tight ends in NFL history. His streak of seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons ended last year, but only because he sat out the final regular-season game after the Chiefs clinched their playoff spot.

Despite the slow start, Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy isn’t worried. “He knows who he is,” Nagy said in a press conference on September 19. “It’s just a matter of time.”

Kelce Focuses on Improvement

On his podcast, Kelce explained that many factors go into a receiver’s performance: “If you want to catch the football, it has to be the right play, the right coverage, and everybody doing their job.” Despite these challenges, Kelce remains optimistic and focused on improving.

“I’m not going to sit here and get frustrated about it,” Kelce said. “I used to get really, really pissed off and almost lose my cool a lot of the time from not having that success.” He acknowledged that in the past, he struggled with not living up to his own expectations, but now he’s more focused on maintaining a high level of accountability.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who has worked with Kelce for many years, reassured fans that the star tight end’s dip in numbers isn’t a reflection of his ability. “I’ve been with him for quite a long time,” Nagy said. “There’s been zero change. He’s been great.”

Chiefs Aren’t Worried About Kelce’s Performance

While Kelce’s numbers have dropped, both the player and the Chiefs’ coaching staff are confident that he’ll bounce back.

Nagy, who returned to the Chiefs after a stint as the Chicago Bears’ head coach, pointed out that Kelce has proven himself time and time again. “You look at the targets, you look at the numbers, you look at all that stuff with Travis,” Nagy said. “He’s been really good.”

With the support of his coaches and teammates, Kelce emphasized that stats are no longer his main focus. “I stopped caring about stats four or five years ago,” he said. “I just went out there and started to play free and play for my guys.”
