NFL Analyst Reveals Major Concerns About Bears QB Caleb Williams

The 2024 NFL rookie class was expected to be one of the most talented groups in recent memory, especially at the quarterback position. Leading the charge was Chicago Bears’ rookie Caleb Williams, the highly-touted No. 1 overall pick out of the University of Southern California.

With immense expectations, many believed Williams would quickly show why he was considered a generational talent. However, through two weeks of NFL action, Williams and other rookie quarterbacks have found themselves under scrutiny, with some questioning whether they truly deserve the hype they received before the season began.

A Rough Start for Caleb Williams

The Bears currently sit at 1-1, but the early success of the team has come in spite of some struggles from Williams.

Described as a player with elite playmaking ability and an uncanny ability to ad-lib under pressure, he has not yet lived up to those lofty expectations. Through the first two games, Williams has completed just 56.1 percent of his passes, thrown zero touchdowns, and given up two costly interceptions.

Even more concerning, he has been sacked nine times—more than any other quarterback in the league at this point.

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin echoed the concerns of many when she stated on “Around the Horn” that Williams may not “survive through the season” if his offensive line doesn’t improve.

“He’s not going to survive through the season if he keeps getting hit like that. The Bears have to be able to run the ball to take pressure off the quarterback.”

Chicago’s failure to protect their star rookie has been glaring, and it has severely hampered his ability to find rhythm and showcase the full extent of his talents.

Offensive Line Woes

For any rookie quarterback, learning to navigate the complexities of NFL defenses is challenging enough, but doing so behind a poor offensive line only compounds the difficulty. While Williams is renowned for his ability to make something out of nothing, even the most talented quarterbacks need adequate protection to perform at a high level.

So far, the Bears’ offensive line has failed him, leaving Williams to face constant pressure in the pocket.

The Bears’ lack of pass protection has clearly disrupted their offensive flow. Despite having a number of talented skill players on paper, their production has been underwhelming as Williams has struggled to get them the ball.

As a result, the team’s offense has looked disjointed, raising concerns about whether they can turn things around.

Glimpses of Hope

However, it’s not all doom and gloom for Williams and the Bears. When the rookie was given time to throw in their Week 2 matchup against the Houston Texans, he showed flashes of why he was such a coveted prospect.

In those moments where the offensive line held up, Williams was productive, showing poise and the ability to make accurate throws down the field.

But the big question remains: Can the Chicago Bears fix their offensive line issues fast enough to allow Williams to flourish?

Upgrading a team’s line in the middle of the season is no easy task, and finding a viable trade to improve it could be a challenge. Chicago will need to assess whether they can patch up their protection issues before the season begins to slip away.

Long Season Ahead

Caleb Williams has the raw talent to become an elite quarterback, but his shaky start is a reminder that even the best prospects need a stable environment to succeed. If the Bears can shore up their protection and allow him more time in the pocket, there’s a good chance Williams can start living up to the generational talent label that accompanied him into the NFL.

But for now, both Williams and the Chicago Bears face an uphill battle as they attempt to navigate the growing pains of a rookie season marred by early struggles.
