Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George had a very important decision to make. By 6 p.m. ET, he had to decide what he was going to do with his player option for the 2024-25 season. Worth $48.7 million, he has made a bold decision, opting to decline the option.
Paul George is set to enter free agency and is now arguably the best player available. Declining his player option takes some teams out of the mix, such as the Golden State Warriors, who have no cap space to sign him.
With free agency starting up on Sunday, Paul George intends to meet with teams who have enough cap space to sign him and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Philadelphia 76ers have been linked to him the most, but the Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs also have cap space to work with.
It will be interesting to see what kind of offers Paul George receives. Rumors have swirled that the Los Angeles Clippers don’t want to offer him the kind of max deal he was seeking. The 76ers, determined to add to their star duo of Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, are reportedly willing to offer him a max deal.
A nine-time All-Star, Paul George could change the landscape of the NBA with the decision he makes. If he leaves the Los Angeles Clippers, they are left in a very tough spot. Kawhi Leonard signed a multi-year extension, but George and James Harden opted against doing that.
If he joined the 76ers, they would have a stellar Big 3 to work with. After the moves the New York Knicks made this offseason and the Eastern Conference having the 2024 NBA Champion Boston Celtics, Philadelphia has work to do to catch them.
Adding Paul George would certainly help the 76ers. But, don’t expect the Los Angeles Clippers to give up on him so easily. If they want to remain competitive in the Western Conference, they need to bring him back.
