The 2024 NBA offseason is going to be a major one for the Golden State Warriors. It could be the end of their Big 3 Era, with Klay Thompson hitting free agency. If he does depart, one potential replacement could be Paul George.
According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the Golden State Warriors are preparing to go all-in on Paul George. They are one of the teams willing to offer him a four-year max contract, something the Los Angeles Clippers are hesitant to offer.
“He wants a full out max and there are a number of teams out there, I am told, that are prepared to give it to him, who are prepared to trade for him. One of those teams, potentially, is up the coast in Golden State,” Windhorst said.
Part of the reason that the Golden State Warriors are being linked to Paul George so heavily is his preference to stay on the West Coast. He is a native of Palmdale, California, which is right outside of Los Angeles.
According to Windhorst, that was one of the issues the Philadelphia 76ers ran into when kicking the tires on Paul George. It was revealed last week that they were moving in a different direction, and that was a major reason why. (H/T RealGM)
Commuting to San Francisco, where the Warriors play, is something that Draymond Green and Chris Paul reportedly did a lot last season. Paul George could do the same if Golden State is able to pull off a deal for him.
Saying goodbye to Thompson would certainly be hard, but it is difficult to envision the Golden State Warriors competing with their current core and roster construction. Acquiring Paul George would improve their standing in what is going to be a loaded Western Conference.
To make an opt-in-and-trade scenario work, which the Golden State Warriors are reportedly considering, would take some maneuvering. Andrew Wiggins would likely be the centerpiece when it comes to salary matching. Kevon Looney, Moses Moody and Gary Payton opting into his player option would work money-wise.
