There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers and how their offseason could unfold. A lot of the focus has been on LeBron James, who could become a free agent. But, one NBA analyst has cautioned it is his star running mate, Anthony Davis, who could eventually be on the move.
Last week, the Lakers hired JJ Redick to become their head coach. Another first-time head coach is certainly a risky route for the franchise to take, but they are reportedly high on Redick’s potential.
In the opinion of former NBA player turned analyst Kendrick Perkins, that could lead to Anthony Davis wanting out. On a segment of ESPN’s NBA Today last week, he cautioned that the All-Star big man could request a trade if things start slowly under Redick.
“I wanna see how it goes with Anthony Davis, because I’mma give it ’til the All-Star break,” Perkins said after the hire. “If JJ Redick is not thriving and Anthony Davis is not playing at an elite level and he’s not happy, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wants out of LA. I’m gonna give it ’til All-Star break.”

That is a bold take from Perkins. While he is just voicing his opinion on the matter and not sharing new from a source, it is still going to raise some eyebrows.
Especially because Anthony Davis was reportedly part of the process to hire Redick. While it was reported several times that James was not part of the head coaching search to replace Darvin Ham, The Athletic shared that Davis was.
“The decision to choose Redick came as the Lakers, led by Pelinka, prioritized Davis’ voice in the process and ensured that he understood the shared vision,” as written over at The Athletic.
The Lakers will certainly be a team that people keep a close eye on. As long as James and Anthony Davis are there, they will be expected to contend for NBA titles.
Is Redick the right person to lead them? Pressure and expectations will be sky-high. Ham led the team to the postseason twice, getting eliminated both years by the Denver Nuggets and was fired.
If Redick doesn’t find success right away, some of what Perkins said about Anthony Davis could come to fruition.
