Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark has been the center of plenty of discussions recently. She was left off of the roster for Team USA, which drummed up a lot of debates. Basketball-wise, it is hard to argue against her omission from the team as all 12 players on the roster were deserving.

However, from a business standpoint, leaving Caitlin Clark off the team is a major miss. She is as big of a star in the basketball world as anyone right now, carrying her fame from her collegiate career over to her start as a professional.

Alas, not all of the debates are healthy ones. There have been racist and misogynistic made with her name at the center of some. That is something Caitlin Clark isn’t okay with, as she issued comments pushing back on using her name to disparage and slander other players in the WNBA.

“People should not be using my name to push those agendas. It’s disappointing. It’s not acceptable,” Clark said Thursday when asked about the comments. “… Treating every single woman in this league with the same amount of respect, I think, it’s just a basic human thing that everybody should do.”

Caitlin Clark is not only the biggest star currently in the WNBA, but her being white has been brought up in plenty of debates online. It isn’t something that she can control, but it was smart on her part to get out in front and make sure people know she doesn’t agree with the things some people are mentioning her name in.

“I don’t put too much thought and time into thinking about things like that, and to be honest, I don’t see a lot of it,” Clark said. “Basketball is my job. Everything on the outside, I can’t control that, so I’m not going to spend time thinking about that.”

Her comments also drew some commentary from other players in the WNBA. Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington used her social media platform to say Caitlin Clark needs to do more to speak out against people using her name to be divisive.

On the court, the two were involved in a dustup when the Sun and Indiana Fever faced off recently. Carrington looked to mock the Iowa star for exaggerating a foul call. That wasn’t the first and won’t be the last time that Caitlin Clark is involved in something on the court.

She has been receiving several welcome to the WNBA moments, something analysts have said her teammates need to start sticking up for her in. Veterans want to show the Indiana Fever star she still needs to earn her place, but there is a way to do that inside the boundaries of the game.
