With the Philadelphia Phillies battling the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, they recently suffered a big injury blow to catcher J.T. Realmuto.

It has been a really strong start to the season for the Philadelphia Phillies. After a great 2023 season, the Phillies once again look like true contenders in the National League, as they are currently in a heated race with the Atlanta Braves.

The Braves have been able to overcome some key injuries to Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuna Jr., and the Philadelphia Phillies will have to do the same. It was just recently announced by ESPN that the Phillies will now be without their All-Star catcher J.T Realmuto for a while, as he undergoes knee surgery.

Philadelphia Phillies star catcher J.T. Realmuto will undergo surgery on his right knee.

The Phillies placed Realmuto on the 10-day injured list Tuesday and announced the three-time All-Star will have a meniscectomy Wednesday in Philadelphia. The team did not disclose a timeline for Realmuto’s return.

This is certainly not good news for the Phillies for a few reasons. Firstly, Realmuto is one of the better hitters in their lineup, as he is batting over .260 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs. Also, at 33 years old, seeing a catcher needing to get knee surgery is a major cause for concern.

In addition to Realmuto being on the IL, the Phillies also have Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh currently out. With three starters out of the lineup, the daunting Phillies lineup now looks somewhat pedestrian.

With injuries piling up, the Phillies will have to have players step up like the Braves have had. Fortunately, Bryce Harper, Alex Bohm, and Kyle Schwarber are still in the lineup, but Philadelphia will have to find ways to get productive at-bats from the bottom of the order.

Since J.T. Realmuto doesn’t have a timetable to return, the Philadelphia Phillies are likely going to err on the side of caution. Hopefully for Philadelphia, he will be back sooner rather than later.
